Re: Post op question

Ibuprofen is important since it reduces swelling, my doc suggested taking that consistently, even if not a lot of pain because the swelling takes time to go down.

the hydrocodone is strong pain blocker but won't help with swelling.

Re: Cramping and pain management early post-op

I took Hydrocodone every 4 hours and Tylenol every 6. I had quite a cocktail going on with pain meds, gas Ex and stool softeners so I made a little chart of what time I could take what to help me keep track. Tylenol for pain, Advil for swelling, Hydro for major pain. If you doc didn't give you specific instructions, your pharmacist can help you determine how each interacts.

Re: Cramping and pain management early post-op

During the first few days I did have some sharp pains as well as aches, especially when changing positions, but they became lesser over time. As for pain management, you have to find what works for you. In the very beginning, I took ibuprofen and my narcotic at the same time. After a few days I was only needing the narcotic twice a day, then once, and then one day, I didn't feel a lot of pain, so I just stopped taking them. Just be careful with the tylenol. Hydrocodone will have a dose of 5/325 or 10/750. The first number is the strength of the narcotic. The number after the slash is the amount of Tylenol mixed with the narcotic. Make sure if you take extra tylenol, to read the maximum dose and don't exceed it and remember that what is in the hydrocodone counts. I was taking 600 mg of ibuprofen 2-3 times a day at the advice of my doctor. It can be taken with tylenol. Does that help? That is just what I did, but what you should do is call your doctor and ask how he wants you to do it. Write it down because you may forget again. I had a hard time remembering early on, so I even wrote it down every time I took a pill because 5 minutes later I would wonder whether or not I took it.

Re: Cramping and pain management early post-op

My doctor told me not to put anything on my incisions early post-op. He said itching was normal unless I developed a rash or it got hot and red. He told me I could gently pat the incisions (which helped more than you would think), and I was allowed benedryl.
