hysterectomy and lupus

I am scheduled for tah/bso and have Lupus. My rheumatologist says I will need to me off my Imuran and Plaquenil for a week before and week after the surgery so I will heal properly. Being off these meds makes me very, very ill. Hearing this almost made me want to cancel the surgery but, I don't feel this is even an option. I am more worried about being sick from this than having the surgery.

Has anyone on this site with Lupus had surgery? How did you do?

Hi there,
If you go to the top of the page and click on search you can search the word "Lupus." I just did that to check for you and a number of things do come up, so maybe you can find some helpful information there. The word you search will be highlighted in the responses making the information easier to find when you look at the threads. Hope this is helpful to you!
Take good care sister, and best wishes to you.

lupus

HI,
I HAD A TVH WITH BLADDER SLING ON 3/7/05 AND I ALSO HAVE LUPUS.
WHEN MY RHUEMY. ASK IF I WERE NERVOUS ABOUT THE SURGERY I HAD SAID I WAS BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE REACTION IT MIGHT HAVE ON THE LUPUS. HE TOLD ME THAT I WOULD BE FINE. THAT HE FINDS THAT WOMAN WITH LUPUS TEND TO DO AS WELL AS WOMAN WITHOUT WHEN IT COMES TO SURGERY. THEY DIDN'T TAKE ME OFF MY PLAQUINAL. THEY DID ZAP ME WITH A LARGE DOSE OF PREDNISONE DURING THE SURGERY.
I CAN'T COMPARE A TVH TO WHAT YOU ARE HAVING BUT I WILL TELL YOU I HAD A VERY GOOD RECOVERY WITH NO COMPLICATIONS.
IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME.

Thank you Frozen Yogurt and Canice for your replies. I will do a search. Canice I glad you did well and your rheumy was so positive. I have not seen mine face to face yet. He will probably reassure me too. You are right, they will give me a pre-surgical dose of steroids. It may help me tolerate being off the Imuran, but the side-effects are murder.

Well, I feel at peace with my decision and I feel everything will turn out OK in the end. Thanks.
