Language note - oops
Sorry I seem to have caused an outbreak of asterisks.
Just to explain - I am British and when I use a three-letter-word beginning with A it is meant as a donkey or mule, as in the Bible. If I wish to be vulgar about bottoms, I use a four-letter-word beginning with A and containing an R.
When I mean a know-it-all, I say Smartalek.
I was reprimanded for it so I apologise to anyone who may have taken offence, even though the word "Belly" is plastered all over the adverts on this site, which we find a little vulgar, preferring abdomen or tummy.
Hope this clears it up ... such a bother this language barrier.

People just don't understand
Oh I love this place!!!!!
I got tired of my male boss looking at me and saying 'are you feeling okay' every time I dragged myself to work during my periods. Finally I told him that if I looked like I had no blood in my face, it was because I had no blood left in me anywhere. Tee-hee. He never asked again.
I'm now recovering from my TAH and sooooo happy that it's done.
This is a far better place to vent than at our dhs.
Cameron - I'm not american either.... the language thing does crop up sometimes. I wear sneakers on my feet, and soda is something I bake with, not drink!
Cheers to us!

People just don't understand
I've been getting some of the same comments, and in some ways I prefer the comments to the times when I can tell people are thinking it and not saying it. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, because it is entirely possible that they might think I've been brow-beaten by a high-handed doctor who hasn't been up-front with me about alternatives. I generally respect this and try to use it as a teaching opportunity to help people understand that there are actual reasons for having a hysterectomy.
I'm also a Christian, and my response to the pastor would be something like this: "I am thankful for your prayers. Please know that I have been very prayerful about this for x years. God has given my heart a peace to help me know that this is the right path for me. This is how he is healing me. I would like continued prayers for emotional healing, because even though this is the right decision, this is not an easy thing to do."
Even when people truly have our best interests at heart, they don't know our personal paths to this decision. Unfortunately, too many times they don't have our best interests at heart. I like to give the benefit of doubt when I can, but I must confess I've responded to a "Have you really thought about this?" with a "Not at all. I just thought it would be an easy way to get morphine."

People just don't understand
I understand. I told someone I was going in for my hysterectomy and they said, "Is it elective?" I thought to myself, well is a hysterectomy ever really "elective"? Yes, I want this done and I could choose not to have it done but dealing with heavy bleeding for 2 straight hours where I can't even leave the bathroom - hmmm... to me this is not elective! It my uterus was fine and normal, I wouldn't be going in but it is not and I am ready to over it!
Going in at 5:00 am tomorrow!!!

LOL! I thought I was the only one that did the towel on the bed thing. That's too hillarious. As the others have said, you know what's best for you. You trust your doctor and the professionals who have been trained to give direction, and you know what you've been through.
All the best,
Selvon

I not only did the towel on the bed thing.. I bought red sheets as I was so tired of the stains on the white ones.
I love the response "easy way to get morphine" LOL
And the preacher who said God would heal w/o surgery? Good Grief. That man would scare me.. I personally would be looking for a different congregation.
I was fortunate that no one I talked to ever suggested that I try another treatment instead of surgery.. but I did have some people try to talk me out of having a less invasive procedure. They were convinced that an abdominal incision was the only safe process for cancer staging. All I could do was smile and nod and keep on with my plans.
Hang in there, it will get better.

I'd normally be the last in the world to criticise someone else's religious leader but .... that priest is a rather ignorant and silly person and I really don't think you should take his opinions to mean very much, and he's a man so double that.
I am starting to thank my lucky stars that I am in France where we are a nation of hypochondriacs and the word hysterectomy only starts an outpouring of sympathy, demand for details and reminiscences of what Auntie Jeanette had, or Cousine Cecile's fabulously easy time.
This place really is a gem. Thanks everyone, it is so good to be here.

People just don't understand
I joined a fibroids forum. And whenever me or anyone mentions wanting to have a hysterectomy they get a cabillion post asking why and have we tried this treatment and that one. I feel like asking them if they think they are the only ones smart enough to google fibroids. I know about all the treatment and I have spoken to three Dr.s
I'm 42 with two living bio daughters ages 24 and near 21 and one step daughter 14. I have been having periods since i was just 12 and having bleeding and pain issues all along the way. I have had 4 D & Cs. I thought they were to support eachother in this journy as it is a long one and whats right for one might not be right for another.
GGGRRR!!! *STUPID PEOPLE*
Do whats right for you. No one else walks in your shoes or lives your life.
Edited to add:
I also have done the towel on the bed for years untill i got to water proof pads for the bed. They have been a god send.
Cameron, what about the word fanny? LoL!

People just don't understand
People drive you crazy with their comments and suggestions when they know absolutely nothing about anything! I had a woman tell me to take Vitamin E in megadoses to dissolve my cantaloupe-sized cyst and she made the suggestion 1 week before surgery! I almost lost it. The only solace has been telling people about it.
Actually I was very hesitant about having the surgery, almost canceled several times. Then I read "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" by Christine Northrup (doctor). And even she, who I would have thought would be new agey, had a great section about the fetish people have made of self curing. Use vitamins! Meditate! Visit a past life! When actually the surgery is the best choice. She herself had a growth she tried to treat with vitamins etc. and it GOT BIGGER.
Sometimes surgery is the answer. For me it was absolutely the right choice. (It was not possible to have a less invasive surgery, either, due to the size of the growth.)
The scariest time for me was the week or two before the surgery due to anxiety. A valium the day before helped. The surgery itself was over in the blink of an eye and the care I received was amazing.
