I will have my surgery on thurs, Jan 16th. I am ready, I think!! Of course, my period showed up last friday with a vengence. One last hurrah before it is gone. I haven't left the house in three days because it has been so bad. I am so looking forward to never having to deal with this mess again.
Thanks for all the advice. Just one more question for my post-op sisters. How long was it before you felt good after a vaginal hysterectomy? How long before you resumed normal activities?

Hi kfr,

I'm sorry you're having such a rough period this week. At least it's the last one!!

I also had a TVH, but I had repairs done for a cystocele and a rectocele, so keep in mind that my recovery was a little bit different than yours will be. In fact, since we all are different, it's hard to generalize, but I had general anesthesia, and then woke up with a morphine drip. My catheter was taken out the next morning, as was the gauze packing, and I went home that afternoon with a prescription for Percocet for pain. I ended up allergic to the Percocet and had to switch to Darvocet, but the pain was never anything that I couldn't control.

I was released to drive at two weeks post-op, although I really didn't feel much like it for another week or so. At 3 1/2 weeks I had to go to our DD's (about 2 hours away) and by the time I got there, I was fairly uncomfortable, but not in pain.

I went back to work (a desk job) full time at 5 1/2 weeks post-op. If you work, I would advise going back part-time for the first week or so, if possible. I didn't and I was totally exhausted by the time I would get home in the evenings.

I was given the OK for sex after 6 weeks, but because of the A & P repairs, we waited a couple more weeks until I felt I was ready.

I wish you a successful and uneventful surgery and recovery. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers this week.

's

Hi kfr,

I had a TAH/BSO so my surgery was a little different due to the abdominal incision. TVH's require just a much recovery time. Follow your post op instructions and listen to your body. If all goes well, you should be ready to resume all normal activities at about 6-8 weeks (you will have gradually been doing things in the meantime with doc's permission). Everyone is different, so take advantage to act like the you will become!! You may not get another chance for a long, long time.

Best wishes to you on your upcomming surgery - let us know how your doing and post any ??'s you may have on the post op boards after your home. Both before and after, come see us in the Chat Room. You'll find lots of pre's and post's to ask ?'s and get advice.

Good Luck!!

kfr,

Good luck on the 16th! I don't have much to add as I'm having my TAH the day after you. Take it easy, I'll see you on the post op side!
