Night Sweats - Kept Ovaries

I had TAH 3/19 and kept both ovaries. No problems whatsoever, at least not yet and knocking on wood. I never had night sweats before surgery, but have every night (three nights) post op. Does anyone know if the hysterectomy triggers a mini-menopause or perhaps a little post-op trauma to the left-behind ovaries (maybe they are feeling helpless)? No menopause pre-surgery either, and no other signs now.

I'm glad everything is going well for you!

It is ever so common for the ovaries to 'go into shock' following surgery. They literally go to sleep and can take a little while to kick back in again ~ anything, really, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months; mine were more stubborn and took a couple of months! So, yes, whilst they're not working properly, you may experience menopausal symptoms.

If you try a forum search (click top right on the main page of this post-op forum) on 'sleeping ovaries', you'll find loads of posts. Below is a link to an HS article that I hope you'll find useful:

Try to hang in there for now and I wish you all the best for a smooth recovery. Remember to rest!

Night Sweats - Kept Ovaries

Hi candy3196,

It's great that things are going well for you so far!

pooodle has some very good information. I kept my ovaries and they worked wonderfully until about 4 months post-op. Then I started having hotflashes. Everyone's ovaries can be a little funny after surgery. Please let your doc know what is happening because they can help you figure out what the problem is, and can often offer a number of options to help. I chose to use an estrogen patch, and after the first week I felt great! No more crazy hotflashes!

Because every Sister is different, it's best to look to your doctor for info and options on this. I hope you find the answers you're looking for!

I also kept my ovaries. I had night sweats until I stopped taking the pain meds, then they stopped. I have strange reactions to meds and I am presumming this was one.
Good luck.

Night Sweats - Kept Ovaries

Hey Candy, Just got back from the castle - we had our surgeries the same day! I, too, kept both ovaries and woke up this morning in a pool of sweat. Some times I even feel warm......not an actual hotflash, but warmer then normal and then it subsides. From what I understand, and as the ladies have said, it takes some time for the ovaries to function normally, just like our bladder and bowels. My doctor confirmed that, as well.

One day at a time sister and soon we'll be sweat free and Aunt Flo will never visit us again!

Night Sweats - Kept Ovaries

Hi there Candy,
I had a TVH and kept both of my ovaries and I had night sweats for the first couple of months until my ovaries kicked back in from the shock of surgery. If it keeps up longer I would ask your Doc to check your hormone levels to see if they aren't working right so you can find something that works for you.
Have a great day.

Night Sweats - Kept Ovaries

hello all
I had a tah on 3/13 and I kept my ovaries. I did have a fever for a few days post surgery. After the fever went away I was still waking up very hot and my deod. wasn't working. I was on the edge of a migraine and concerned about taking too much Motrin . Sometimes I react weird to meds. It wasn't until I started crying during 5min. of Texas walker ranger rerun that I realized it might be my sleeping ovaries. I've never even watched that show, very silly. A few days and showers and tears later I feel better. I'm not 100% counting on it but I think their waking up. lol
