Getting Ready for TVH 7/3/06 HELP!!!
Scheduled for 7/3/06 5:30 a.m. TAH, eveything is going. Ovaries, tubes, all of it. I'm 45 and ready. Years of heavy periods, endometrosis, cysts after cysts, 2 ectopics and then a baby (my miracle). Had 2 hysterosalpingograms in 2 different years that showed completley blocked tubes and years later 1996 was blessed with a baby where it belonged, in my uterus. My miracle girl.
I have always been a Gyno nightmare with painful ovulation (like a blown up balloon for 3 days) painful sex and then 2 days of staying home due to my heavy periods, that have just gottten worse and worse over the years. Had endometrosis surgery in 2001, wasn't too bad, but was there. Tons of scar tissue from my previous ectopics in 1984 and then again in 1989. 5 laparoscopies over the years and finally tubal ligation in 1997. Tried different pills to contol the bleeding and 4 D&C's over a span of 12 years. Not to mention the week of PMS before my periods where I become the Evil Mother & wife. It seems the last 5 years of my life that I only get one good week out of the month, the week after my period. So, yes I am ready to let the uterus and all it's little trouble makers go away. I want the whole month and the year and thereafter. I am really praying that this is the answer and everything will go well. I am looking at it this way. As long as my surgery goes well and there are no complications, I think I can deal with the Instant Menopause, after all my PMS epsiodes have trained me so well to deal with ups and downs and attitudes, and i won't have a choice anyway. I don't like the idea of being on hormones for years but I gotta do what I gotta do.
I do hope sex is still good, worried about that. I am a smoker and that terrifies me. I am trying to cut down and have the patch but am making excuses to put it on, since I have 3 packs of smokes left. I really don't want to quit, but health wise and financially, it's way over due. So I am dealing with a huge tub of emotions right now, way too much for one person to think about.
I am also worried that no one in my home is going to take care of superwoman after surgery. I have been testing them all in my little ways to see if they even comprehend the gravity of my worries and what I am going to need at least the first few weeks. You all know, being a Mom means they all get to ask Mom where's this or that before they open their own eyes and brains to find things. I feel like my husband thinks I'm his left brain, the part that does all the work...He has been out of work since 9/15/05 with an injury to his back 4 herniations, all conventional therapies and nucleoplasty have failed to date. He is on workers comp and waiting for his surgery approval which looks to be about October at this point. His Doc is the best in the U.S. in Manhattan, NY and that's how long he's booked in advance. We are also going to lose our health insurance comes September 07, so that is also part of my decision to take the elevator up a stop to menopause. I've had a bad gyno history and hopefully having my TAH will be one less thing to worry about in the future without having insurance.
I am a Mom of 2 girls 9 and 22 also a 29 year old son. I became a Grandma in September 05. I was a caregiver to my Mom who past away due to complications of Alzheimers in 2004. I miss her so much and it still feels like I lost her yesterday. She became just like an infant in the last year of her journey.
I work from home, so that helps. After my recovery from TAH, I gotta go get into a job with benefits and continue to carry my share of the finances. I am a big chatter and love to write and talk, thank you all again for being a part of the Hyster Sisters. It has been my salvation and I plan on continuing to visit here everyday till D-day and then as soon after my TAH as I can.
Anyone have any pearls of wisdom for me? I feel like I just can't think right these last couple days, i guess because it's getting so close. And to top it all off, I have bad cramps today which means my period is either strating tonight or tomorrow. I am trying to tell myself it's the last one, enjoy it, but that is pathtic for me to say. Good Riddance is a better term. At least I know I won't have it for surgery. I will continue to read the boards but please feel free to give me your input. At this point I need help keeping my mind in check and having trouble doing that. I seem to be biting everyone's haed off if they ask me anything!

Getting Ready for TVH 7/3/06 HELP!!!
Everything will be fine & you'll do great. Just try to relax and pray about it. Nothing bad will happen, after all the family couldn't make it without you, who would find all their things and think for them? lol! Mine's set for the 20th and I'm worried about the sex life thing probably more than anything but I've read a lot and most women don't seem to have a problem with it especially if they're taking harmones (I'll be keeping my ovaries unless something goes wrong). Don't worry about taking care of anyone but yourself when you get home. I have a husband and 2 girls 6 & 12 & it's going to be hard on them having to find things for themselves but I'm sure they'll manage & my husband will get to try out his laundry and cooking skills for a change and if that doesn't work I don't think anyone's ever died from eating cereal for dinner. When you're all better then you can go back to being superwoman and they may even appreciate it more after seeing how much you actually do for them. (well, maybe not but we can dream right?) I hope everything goes great and you have a fast recovery. God bless!

Getting Ready for TVH 7/3/06 HELP!!!
hey i'm also from long island! i'm having my TAH on the 17th at Good Sam. i feel for you about the smoking issue - i'm 43 years old and was a smoker from the time i was 13 to 39. i found the gum to be the only way i could stop - tho i have to admit, i'm still chewing it (half a piece at a time - 2 mil) but i haven't had a cig or a desire to light one since feb 2002...as long as i've got the gum! you can do it! drop me an email if you want to discuss this....and of course, all my best to you with your surgery. let me know how it goes. i'm also worried about caretaking issues - it's just me and my daughter(18), some close friends, and a boyfriend who lives up in westchester. i don't think they realize how it's going to be for me - the boyfriend thinks we're going to a yankees game 2 weeks after my surgery! i think your husband and kids will recognize their importance as caretakers after you get home - tho i like your idea about testing them now! take care - keep a sense of humor and a healthy recovery to you!

Getting Ready for TVH 7/3/06 HELP!!!
Good luck with your surgery!!!
About the smoking, I'm a smoker and when I saw my doctor in pre-op, I asked her to prescribe a nicotine patch for me, which she did. I had my surgery at 9:00 AM and the nurse put the patch on me around 5:00 PM. I was so out of it most of the day that I didn't need a cigarette, but I was awake all night the the patch was great - I didn't have any cravings at all. Of course, when I came home I started smoking again but I've been giving a great deal of thought to quitting and since I have experienced how well the patch worked for me, I'll go with that when I'm ready to quit.
When you're in the hospital recovering, the last thing you need to deal with are nicotine cravings. Ask your doctor about the patch and see if it works for you.

Getting Ready for TVH 7/3/06 HELP!!!
Best of Luck to you! You will do just fine. Since my surgery in March, I have never felt better. I too am a smoker and had stopped smoking 3 weeks prior to surgery. The thought or even the smell made me sick. I just strted back up again in May. I need to quit, but right now the stress level is way too high. (moved into a new home) I was taking Premairn at first, but had gained 20 pounds so now I do not take anything. Hot flashes are bad at night, and I have to watch my emotions so I don't bite peoples heads off, but I think its worth it to not gain weight. (talk to your dr. about your options first!!) Looking back now, the pain level was not bad. Climbing the stairs once I came home was the worst part. Keep your chin up....you cn get through this!!

Getting Ready for TVH 7/3/06 HELP!!!
your post made me laugh, mostly because I can see you going off on a tangent, good for you for being able to voice yourself in such a way that even when your down, and feeling like we do, you can still put a smile on our faces.... and I know how your feeling about the husband, yikes..can they do anything on their own? also I was very touched by you mentioning your mother........I lost mine also, same kind of senario....really ***** doesnt it. I am blessed knowing that they will be with us during our surgeries, watching over us like they always did.
sure do miss her.
good luck Rachel

They'll Figure It Out. It is amazing when supermom takes off, :superman: somehow the family finds a way to feed and clothe themselves. Some of that pressure is self inflicted and what a great way to excuse ourselves from caring. . .a bed at the castle and good meds!
As for the smoking--I told my Dr at my pre op this week to order a nic patch for me. Never tried one, I am an unapologetic smoker, but DD the nurse assures me that this is for the best. She also gently suggested that now would be a good time to quit and I gently told her that I would take one issue at a time.

This is exactly how I hope it will be. In a perfect world..... I hope!!!
If not, oh well. We will learn.
Thanks so much! The best part I'm thinking about is to finally be able to say "NO" to all of them or "I Can't Do That". I can't wait, it's a shame I have to go thru this just to get some peace, rest and hopefully relaxation and not too much pain. I am hoping that I can loook back some day and be happy that I did the right thing. I love to read the posts where women are so happy they did it and are living much better gyno lives.
