Upcoming hysterectomy: concerned about gas pains post-op

Good morning ladies,

I'm already nervous and scared about my upcoming surgery but now I'm reading about the gas pain in shoulder and neck from the co2 gas they use is very painful and unbearable. I definitely need some comforting information on this.

Thank you ladies for all the great information you provide to us other women who are terrified about surgery.

Re: gas pains

Warm prune juice & gas ex has saved me! Also massage your stomach and take your meds on time, it will not completely get rid of your gas pains but it will dramatically decrease them. Also after the operation nurses gave me ice water with a straw, reject the straw and use the cup, straw = gas

Re: gas pains

I only had slight gas pains in my neck and shoulder that night. After that it was gone! I don't think its the norm for it to be unbearable. Even if it lasts a few days (it did that when I had a laparoscopy a few years ago) it still wasn't horrible. Uncomfortable yes but not unbearable. You'll be ok!

Re: gas pains

Gas pains can hurt!! But, its a different pain than any other, and it will go away!! After my hyst, i had little gas pain exceptbwhen i burped, and that was not fun but went away. Had two laparoscopies since, the last one being this past week, and its no fun! Walking helps, as does laying flat if your tummy will let you. Take your meds, and treat your bowels well. Use gas x to keep air out of them, and make sure they move as constipation will make everything worse. Most of us have some gas pain, but how much and how long greatly varies. This time i am also finding a heating pad and a warm shower beneficial. My theory was always be prepared for the worst, expect the best and move ahead. Good luck.
