2.5 weeks post hysterectomy, experiencing same pain/ symptoms as before surgery
Hi, I am new to this group and so thankful for all the information and support available on this site. I am about 2.5 weeks post op from LVAH with both ovaries intact. I have had a pretty pain free recovery up to this point. But what is bothering me is that beginning this week, I am having the exact same pain and discomfort I was experiencing before the surgery. I literally feel just like I did before and it worries me that this surgery did not fix my problems. My Dr told me I had adenomyosis and enlarged uterus. He also told me I had pooled blood on right side above and in my fallopian tube (not real sure how to explain but it looked like tumor). I always had pain in my lower back and where I would call the area where my ovaries are (more pain on R side) prior to surgery. He left my ovaries but removed tubes, cervix and uterus. He always told me pain was unrelated to ovaries even though it feels like it is my ovaries hurting. I know I am rambling, but I am worried that he should have just taken ovaries too. Is the pain just my body trying to heal or is it the problem is not resolved? At my post op visit he told me it was still healing and that same nerve endings where pain was coming from had to heal as well. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: 2.5 weeks post LAVH, experiencing same pain/symptoms as before surgery
At 2.5 weeks post-op, I think it's too early to say with certainty that you're having the same source of pain as you did pre-op. At 3-4 weeks, many Sisters' stitches start dissolving and it feels like a step back especially as we do a few more simple activities and come off of pain meds. We all had many internal incisions where blood vessels, nerves and ligaments were severed, along with whatever was removed. All that needs healing - your doctor was indeed addressing your concern rather than reading a response off a list (I know it can seem that way sometimes).
It might help to understand the healing process. We tend to view it as the scar tissue which first formed getting stronger over time, but that's not the case at all. Instead, earlier scar tissue gets replaced throughout healing by newer scar tissue, and the earlier stuff dissolves. That's when we're likely to feel twinges and zingers. It's also why we're under a doctor's care for 4-8 weeks, and why even after we're released healing continues for several months.
I don't necessarily think removing your ovaries is beneficial if they are healthy (your doctor might have taken them if they weren't). Even menopausal women like me get benefits from retaining their ovaries, like "dribbling" hormones made by our own bodies and heart health. While many Sisters here can be on HRT, it can be tricky getting the right balance and may have to be tweaked as the years go by. Do keep a journal on your pains so you can talk to your doctor if they don't subside.
Hang in there!

Thank you for your reply. Yes I have to keep reminding myself that it has only been almost 3 weeks! And I would much rather keep my ovaries to avoid all the hormonal issues. I will just be patient and take it easy before I return to work. Thanks again!

I am coming up on 4 weeks since TAH and I am having the same issues as before the surgery. It still hurts to urinate (had another test no infection) and still have groin pain. It has hurt to urinate since July, I am so over all of this.

I am not really having pain when I urinate, but more of a pressure and little burning. I am hoping this is just all part of the healing process. I too am over this and ready to feel "normal"! But at the same time I am trying not to rush the process or do too much. My friend who had same procedure as me the day after I did went back to work after 10 days and then yestersay started hemorrhaging and had to go back into surgery to repair cuff.

Re: 2.5 weeks post hysterectomy, experiencing same pain/ symptoms as before surgery
It's so early for both of you.
My doctor had to surgically remove my uterus from my bladder, which it was adhered to with endometrial tissue. I would have both pain and pressure whenever I needed to urinate, as well as painful urinating for almost 2 months post-op. But now - almost a year out - I feel AMAZING.
This is a much longer healing process than most of us were expecting or prepared for. This is also a much more extensive surgery than most of us have ever had. It's not like our uterus just lifts out - it's well attached!
Be gentle with yourselves. Rest. Follow your doctors' guidelines, as well as the guidelines here, which I think are more informative than many of your doctors' provided. Hang in there - it gets so, so much better!
