fingernail polish question -- dr is ok with it.

I had my pre-op yesterday and asked about fingernail polish. I have clear gel coat that is only covering 1/2 to 1/3 of the tips. It is a gel polish and does not come off easy.

Doctor said that it was fine what I have on (base of finger nails do not have polish

I want to go by the doctor and believe I am fine but don't want to get to the hospital and have someone say no..... I called the manicure place and they said they will remove it for $8. Or I can get a manicure no polish for $20. Dont see the point in having nice nails when I will be just home recuperating..

Want to chance it but dont want surgery to be canceled. I suppose I can always pull the 'my doctor said I didn't have to!" approach. LOL

Re: fingernail polish question -- dr is ok with it.

I was told no polish, lotion, jewelry, or piercings.

But, the doc saw what you had and said it was okay. He or she should know. They may just cover up your nails, or they may trim or remove the polish themselves. I would doubt they would cancel your surgery.

Re: fingernail polish question -- dr is ok with it.

You could ask the hospital what their policy is if you're feeling uncertain.

My daughter wanted to do my nails a couple days before my surgery, a kind of pre-surgery treat. She got all artsy-fartsy and chose a color she knew I'd never select on my own. They turned out really neat! Before she did them I'd asked her if she really wanted to spend that much time on them when I'd just have to remove it the next evening - but she was determined. The next day at my hospital pre-op the nurse commented on my nails, I mentioned my daughter having done them, and how I felt bad having to take them off that night. Imagine my surprise when she looked at me rather surprised and said, "No, you don't!"

So I didn't. I got lots of comments on them from all the nurses, especially when they found out my daughter did them.

Re: fingernail polish question -- dr is ok with it.

Each doctor and/or facility will have different policies so each woman needs to check with her doctor and/or facility about what is okay for her. While some will allow polish, some will not. For one, it can depend on the equipment used at each facility. Some may not be as sensitive or new as others and thus require the nail polish be removed.

Generally speaking, surgery won't be canceled if you have finger or toe polish, but you could wake up with it removed from one finger or toe.
