Ovaries and migraine headaches
I'm having my hysterectomy on the 30th. I'm trying to get educated about how people are doing without ovaries. Have they noticed a postive or negative change in PMS, moods or migraines. Are you on HRT? At some time did you take birth control pills and is the HRT different? This is a huge decision and one I can't change if I make the wrong choice. Your comments are very helpful.

Ovaries after hysterectomy
Hi Cathy,
Here is a link you may find helpful:
https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_96912.htm
The decision to keep your ovaries can be a difficult one; it can depend on your age, condition of your ovaries, family history, the reason for your hysterectomy, etc.
I kept both ovaries when I had my LAVH four years ago - I had the right ovary removed two years ago due to adhesions and a complex cyst. So far the lerft ovary has been functioning well.
I wish you the best - you will be in my prayers on October 30th when you have your hysterectomy.

Ovaries after hysterectomy
I think it depends on why you are having your hyst. and what shape your ovaries are in and if you have risk for ovarian cancer. I had a TAH, RSO on sept 14th and was able to keep my left ovary which is now working fine. It took a couple of weeks for it to kick in but once that happened the hot flashes, mood swings and migraines went away. It is different for each person and I would suggest talking to your doctor to see what is best for you.

Ovaries after hysterectomy
Pinkstoc~
Wow! Good luck on your hysterectomy on the 30th!! I had an abdominal hysterectomy in 98 and had everything removed except for my right ovary. My first 1-2 wks after my hysterectomy, my ovary didnt want to function properly so I took Premarin. Once I found out what it was made of I quit taking it immediately. My ovary began to work again and Ive had no problems up until now. I was just diagnosed with having a very large "mass" in my right ovary and am going to see a Gyno Oncologist soon. I was also diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years ago, but at the time I did NOT have an cysts on my ovaries...they gave me the diagnoses because of my hormone levels (including testosterone), my weight carried around my mid tummy and some other things as well. I am still hoping I do not have to have my last remaining ovary removed, but its looking like I will. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery! Just do what you feel will be right for you and ask alot of questions!

No ovaries here...and I can't tell the difference!
My left ovary was removed in 2003 and my right ovary was removed last month with my TAH. I'm taking Premarin and I don't even notice I'm ovary-less. I've discussed the pros & cons of Premarin with my Dr and surfed the web to get further educated on it. I've chosen to stay on it for now because coming off of it would make my recovery so much worse (depression, more irritability, hot flashes, night sweats, more insomnia). Its a personal decision and with the help of your Dr you will make the right decision for you.
