Dr. said never happened in 45 yrs of practice?
Going thru registration for another surgery right now. TAH 7/26/12. Have an abscess where the hematoma was after surgery. Doc said in his 45 years of doing this, I am the first to have this. We figured it has been there for a little while. In week 2 of recovery I developed fever and pain, especially with urination. Urinalysis was clear, white blood cell count was high. Doc just gave antibiotics. Went back Monday because of sharp pain in lower right side, he said it was nerve damage that would take a few months to go away. So yesterday I went to my primary care doc and he said no nerve damage and sent me to ER for test for appendicitis. ER doc examined me and because of pain level, she changed tests ordered (thank goodness for her). Primary doc ordered X-ray, ER doc did CT scan with contrast. That is how they found the abscess. Was told if just did X-ray, they would not have found it. Moral of this story - if you have even the slightest feeling one doc gave wrong diagnosis, get a second or third opinion. From what I'm told this could have had a really bad outcome if it wasn't caught. So, another open abdominal surgery tomorrow to clean me out. And another stay in the hospital. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, since it has never happened to any of the thousands of patients my doc has had over the past 45 years!?!

Hang in there! How scary! It's a good thing someone did bloodwork at some point and the CT was ordered. I have experienced an achiness as of late especially after urination. No fever though. Your story has me thinking if it continues I need to follow up diligently as you did and push for testing if necessary. Thank you for sharing. Praying for an easy surgery and rapid full recovery for you.

Thank you for the well wishes. And yes, please, anyone who feels something is not right - push for tests, go to another doc, make someone listen (I know it's easier said than done) but you are all worth it.
Rileyapril - pain with urination is not normal, I'm praying you get answers and relief too! Good luck to you and all sisters out there still going thru issues. Will post an update as soon as I can after surgery.

Re: Dr. said never happened in 45 yrs of practice?
Had surgery today, doing ok as long as they keep this pain pump next to me, lol. Had to reopen TAH (c-section) site so lots of incision pain, but as soon as I woke up I noticed the hematoma pain gone - yay! At least now I know why I was in so much pain and everyone who was accusing me of being lazy or wimpy or "milking" it has now changed their tune and are checking on me and are watching my kids for me! Sorry for the venting. Anyway, on IV antibiotics so hoping it will help. Don't know how long I have to stay in the hospital, temp already started creeping up but not unusual right after surgery. Really sleepy, so think I will nap, just wanted to give update. Good luck and best wishes to all sisters.

I'm so sorry to hear about your ordeal. That is really scary but you were very smart and you know your body. I've been having that same pain in my right side and still very sore from the TAH and the emergency surgery within a week afterward. Recovery is super slow and I'm tired of being confined to my house.

Re: Dr. said never happened in 45 yrs of practice?
Well, I talked my doc into letting me come home early (was supposed to stay 2 nights). But happy to be home. Right now just sore and crampy and incision pain because he cut it larger than hyst opening. Said he had to open me more because it was so deep in pelvis and extended out so far, so where the cut went farther to the side is painful now. But even with that, I feel better than I have the past 4 weeks. Hoping for a faster recovery this time. Hoping for fast recoveries for everyone else too!

I am feeling a lot better this week. I've been able to do some light chores around the house. I hope that you are feeling better too! This is a wonderful forum and I'm thankful for finding it.
