LOTS of Questions
Hello!
I'm new to this forum , not found my feet as yet but have some questions that I was hoping you could help answer.
I have severe PMDD and I am due to have a laprascopic total hysterectomy and BSO, hopefully before Christmas. I have been on decapeptyl injections since March which are brilliant and the only menopausal symptoms I've had are hot flushes and decreased libido, both of which are a dawdle in comparison to PMDD.
Here's my questions
1. Will I bleed post op? If so, how much, is it like when you have a period, or after childbirth or just spotting?
2. Will I be catheterised?
3. I've read online about vaginal gauze packs...is this a common thing?
4. Is it worth investing in support pants?
5. I've not been taking any HRT whilst on the decapeptyl injections but should be starting oestrogen only HRT post op, will I start the HRT immediately or will there be a waiting period?
6. Is the menopause after surgery going to be the same or very different to the menopause I'm experiencing on decapeptyl?
7. How painful is it afterwards? Is it paracetamol/ibuprofen sore or morphine sore?
8. I've also read online about gas pain after the use ga to inflate the abdomen. Any tips on how to counteract/reduce this?
I must admit, on the one hand I am desperate for this surgery yet on the other, the longer it is taking to get a date, the more terrified and anxious I am getting.
I was given some physio exercise leaflets at my pre-op appointment and now I'm scared I'm not going to be able to pee, popp or move.
Any help much appreciated

Re: LOTS of Questions
I can't answer all your questions but will answer the ones I can.
1. Some women bleed and some women don't bleed post op. Mostly it's spotting, not like a period and definitely not like after childbirth. The bleeding does sometimes increase as your vaginal stitches dissolve.
2. You will likely have a catheter during surgery but you won't necessarily go home with one. I was told had I needed a radical hysterectomy (mine was for cervical cancer) I would've gone home with a catheter.
3. I don't really know anything about vaginal gauze packs. I didn't have any gauze at all.
4. You probably don't need support pants. Some women do like binders that kind of hold things in after surgery.
5 and 6 I don't have answers to
7. Everyone has a different tolerance for pain. I took the pain pills for a couple days after and then took ibuprofen after that, mostly just so I could be comfortable sleeping.
8. I don't know that there's really anything you can do to prevent that kind of gas pain. It isn't completely intolerable but you can definitely feel it. The best recommendation for that is using a heating back for the area, tends to be in the shoulder area.
They will likely make sure you can urinate before you leave the hospital to make sure your bladder is functioning properly. The pain of not having a bowel movement and being constipated are common threads here. The best recommendations are drinking water, eating healthy (even though you likely won't have much appetite), taking frequent short walks, and drinking more water.

Re: LOTS of Questions
My experience:
1. Will I bleed post op? If so, how much, is it like when you have a period, or after childbirth or just spotting? I only bled a tad at the hospital. Almost no bleeding.
2. Will I be catheterised?I was catheterized for 24 hours. It was no biggie.
3. I've read online about vaginal gauze packs...is this a common thing? I didn't know about this nor had it.
4. Is it worth investing in support pants?I don't think so. I bought a binder on amazon, but honestly, I like the one that the hospital provided better.
5. I've not been taking any HRT whilst on the decapeptyl injections but should be starting oestrogen only HRT post op, will I start the HRT immediately or will there be a waiting period? I can't answer. I kept an ovary.
6. Is the menopause after surgery going to be the same or very different to the menopause I'm experiencing on decapeptyl? see #5
7. How painful is it afterwards? Is it paracetamol/ibuprofen sore or morphine sore? Everyone reacts differently. I have taken pecocet off and on for 10 days. I totally believe that if you're not in pain, your body can heal better. It takes the focus off the pain.
8. I've also read online about gas pain after the use ga to inflate the abdomen. Any tips on how to counteract/reduce this? There were some gas pains, but I wasn't inflated. Walking, eating bland foods, drinking water are things to help.
I'm really surprised at how easy this surgery was for me. You'll be fine. I can already tell because you're seeking answers to make this the best situation. Good luck!

Re: LOTS of Questions
I'm just 4 days post op. So I'll answer what I can.
1. Will I bleed post op? If so, how much, is it like when you have a period, or after childbirth or just spotting? After it was mixture of spotting and the stuff they used to clean/sanitize. By day 2 it was light spotting and nothing after that.
2. Will I be catheterised? I was until the next morning.
3. I've read online about vaginal gauze packs...is this a common thing? That freaked me out! The nurse pulled so much gauze out of me my jaw dropped. Reminded me of a clown with the never ending handkerchief, lol.
4. Is it worth investing in support pants? I've been wearing men's sweatpants. As they ride up high.
5. I've not been taking any HRT whilst on the decapeptyl injections but should be starting oestrogen only HRT post op, will I start the HRT immediately or will there be a waiting period? N/a Kept ovaries
6. Is the menopause after surgery going to be the same or very different to the menopause I'm experiencing on decapeptyl?
7. How painful is it afterwards? Is it paracetamol/ibuprofen sore or morphine sore? Tender! Intense cramps. It wasn't so bad I couldn't communicate but was up there. Just know, with each hour, it gets better. And it's worth it....for me anyway. By day 3 I was able to just use ibuprofen.
8. I've also read online about gas pain after the use ga to inflate the abdomen. Any tips on how to counteract/reduce this? Peppermint candy helped me
Good luck!!!!
