Bad Nausea From Pain Meds

Hello everyone i was just wondering, is anyone kinda a lightweight when it comes to strong pain meds? Like narcotis or a liquid form pain med. I have had some pretty bad side effects from them, i don't want to be sick or cannot eat the whole time after surgery.

Re: Bad Nausea From Pain Meds

I had that. The IV pain meds made me sick. They tried IV anti-nausea meds but they didn't work. Eventually we got far enough that I could eat some crackers and take the oral meds.

That is the only thing that works for me evidently. I never had to have IV pain meds before so I had no idea it was going to be so bad and dehydrating. They did try a IV med that was more like a liquid motrin. It improved the pain but didn't help enough. It was good for 'break through' pain.

Re: Bad Nausea From Pain Meds

If you have any issues with nausea, the day of your surgery tell the anesthesiologist....also tell your doctor and ask to have an order for anti-nausea medication for when you get on the floor after surgery. Also ask your doctor for a prescription for Zofran or other anti-nausea medication for when you go home.

Re: Bad Nausea From Pain Meds

I tend to get an upset stomach as well from the meds. So, at my preop I mentioned it to the anesthesiologist. He prescriped the scoplamine (I think I butchered that name) patch which I was told to put behind my ear the night before surgery. Never had a single issue and forgot it was there. On day 4 I started feeling queasy. I had a refill for one more patch and sent DH out to get it filled. Once again....it worked like a CHARM!

I highly recommend it. This was the first time I was on pain meds with NO vomitting! Talk to you doctor and see if they think it would work for you.
