Bowel Prep

I go in the 17th of April, for what so far is on the charts for a BSO/LAVH/A&P Repair, but I signed a consent for Take Whatever You Need. Anyway, the Doc gives me a Pre-Clean Script for laxative.

Now I understand that a total cleanout is necessary but... I've never been one to use a laxative, nor have ever needed one. My healthy diet takes care of me if not on an "easier" deal anyway. I'm sorry Ladies.

So. If I take 1.5 twice the day before, I think I'll be "cleaning out" for weeks! Can anybody tell me what they think? My Pharmacist said, "You really want to clean out as completely as you can" - right after she told me that she was pregnant with twins. I'm basically on a "lite water" diet anyway (night before crown was to be put on my only back molar left the tooth cracked - can't be saved-can't use the crown we've paid for, blah blah blah) sooooo soft foods, no chewing on that side, soups, mashed everything that doesn't involve chewing, blah blah, blah.

So Now, what do you think of my Doc Recommended Dosage???

Any thoughts before Sunday when I starting this insane script, PM me or email. I need some thoughts here!
Thanks Ladies.
Nan

You need to talk to your dr. Do not try to adjust the dr's orders without talking to him/her.

I did! We discussed my meds and "problem areas", I told her what I was afraid of happening and she said, "It's procedure and I think you should do it.

Is there anyone out there whose been through the same thing?

Bowel Prep

I had to do a complete pre the day before surgery. I started to take the meds at 6pm and ended by 6:30 after that it was a trip to the bath room about every 30 mins. The next day at 5:30 in the morning I had to finish the bottle and also take an enema. I had the same surgery and I was told the dr wants your colon to be empty because it wil be moved along with your bladder so the surgeon can do the surgery. I know you feel that your diet allows you to have good bm but believe me you will be amazed at how much more you have in your colon. It is a long winding tube. I would do what the dr said.

Bowel Prep

Hi Nan,

My surgery is the day after yours, and I was also given the HUGE jug of GoLytely to take the night before. I had to do this before having a colonoscopy and it was basically like everyone said; going every 20-30 minutes for a few hours until nothing but water comes out of you. I have done bowel cleansings on my own over the years so I didn't feel I needed it either, but I was very glad I did as I hate to think of what might have happened if I hadn't. For my last surgery they only had me do an enema, but my last Gyn said I definitely had some bowel adhesions that might be an issue, so this time I needed the full prep to make sure the bowel was fully cleaned out just in case there were any problems during surgery. I wasn't happy when I heard I had to do the full prep, but I am absolutely going to follow my doctors orders to the T. He suggested I mix some Crystal Lite into it so it didn't taste so bad (it's very bitter/salty tasting), so I think I'll give that a shot. My suggestion to you is to stay close to the bathroom and buy the SOFTEST toilet paper you can find the day before! You've got a week left, so take the time to get caught up on things if you can and save the worrying about the bowel prep until the night before. Take care, I'll be right behind you!

Hi Nan

Myself, I would follow the Dr's orders. She may cancel your procedure. I work at an OutPatient Surgery Center and this (cancelling a sx) has happened at our facility many times because patients didn't properly do their prep.

I also had to do the bowel prep. It wasn't fun but it wasn't all that bad of a deal.

Follow your doctor's orders to the letter. They don't tell you to do these things for no reason. One of the reasons you do it is in case they nick your bowels when doing the surgery. If you're cleaned out the risk of stuff from your bowels finding its way into your abdomen is much lower. It's a precautionary measure to protect you. It's not a lot of fun but it's a lot better than an infection.

Thanks one and all! I feel much better about it and it now sounds like I should just stop worrying about it. I knew somehow that Hyster Sisters would make me feel better!

Good luck Barbara, I'll be thinking about you!
