Diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia Last Week! (Aug 2016)

Hi everyone ! I am new to this group. I was diagnosed with non atypical endometrial hyperplasia last week. My doctor will be treating me with Progesterone and a Mirina implant. I have had Juvenile Diabetes for 26 years. I'm nervous about my ultrasound and mammogram tomorrow! Has anyone else been diagnosed with this before? Is hysterectomy a better option than Mirena?

Re: Diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia Last Week!

Stella, how did the ultrasound and mammogram go?

You can google hyperplasia without atypia for more info. There are four kinds: simple hyperplasia without atypia, complex hyperplasia without atypia, simple hyperplasia with atypia and complex hyperplasia with atypia.

The complex hyperplasia with atypia is the most likely to develop into cancer - somewhere like 30-40%. Simple hyperplasia without atypia is somewhere in the less than 1% range.

Re: Diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia Last Week!

Hi Stella. Most insurance companies want the docs to try a more conservative approach such as progesterone or a Marena IUD. I tried Prometrium a natural form of progesterone for about 5 years but my hyperplasia and bleeding got progressively worse and I finally had the hysterectomy. The decision depends upon many factors such as your age and personal and family history of cancer. I was already post menopausal and had a high cancer risk so I finally went with the surgery. Since uterine cancer is slow growing, most docs will try a conservative approach first and see if that works. Even with minimally invasive surgery, a hysterectomy is still major surgery so you want to be sure and also allow yourself plenty of time to heal if you go that route.

Diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia Last Week! (Aug 2016)

Hi, Thanks for your reply. My mammogram was normal, but my ultrasound showed an ovarian cyst. My doctor's PA called me and said it was nothing to worry about. She didn't know if it was the right or left ovary.

I have been on 20 my oral progesterone for 3 weeks. I am now on day six of the worst period ever. I am supposed to have the Mirena put in July 11, but the Progesterone isn't helping and I don't know if the Mirena would help me either.

Re: Diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia Last Week!

I was diagnosed with Complex Endometrial Hyperplasia without atypia in June. I would like the hormonal treatment and am seeking a second opinion. My first doctor told me I would need a hysterectomy.

I would think your bleeding is a good sign and your hyperplasia will regress. I would love to be bleeding right now. I have not had a period since the biopsy more than a month ago. It was hard to communicate with my doctor and I am unsure if that five days of bleeding was a period or not. It did start prior to the biopsy.

Diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia Last Week! (Aug 2016)

Thanks everyone! The Mirena caused me to have an allergic reaction. I have changed doctors.

Since July, I have also been diagnosed with adenomyosis in addition to complex endometrial hyperplasia without atypical. My hysterectomy is scheduled for August 30 and the doctor recommended that I keep my ovaries since synthetic estrogen might aggravate my blood sugar like the progesterone did. In the mean time, I'm nervous and scared about my upcoming surgery, but I guess it is something that I need to do for my health.
