No pre-op, no bowel prep!
I know it seems odd but my dr doesn't require a standard pre-op. I live in a small town in WY and my local hospital requires pre-op at least a week before any procedure. My dr is in the next town over. It is roughly 108 miles to my Drs office. The hospital in that town is next door to her office. When I asked, they said an admitting secretary would call me the Friday before my surgery and do the admittance paperwork and when I got to the hospital, I would sign in and go to the OR waiting room, then a surgical nurse would take me to the lab before surgery then is go into surgery. Now I'm ok with not being poked any more than need be, but I find it odd that pre-op is the day of surgery. How does that give time to fix any issue that may arise? My drs nurses also explained that my dr does not require a bowel prep, just the standard stuff like not eating or drinking anything after midnight. Any one else experience something like this with pre-op? Am I the only one that thinks its strange?

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
I didn't need a bowel prep and my pre-op was an anesthesia nurse calling and asking about my medical history. (She called a few days before surgery) Because I'm needle phobic, they said they'd do the blood work when they started the IV the day of surgery. Thank God!
Good luck and I'll see you on the other side.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
My doctor didn't require me to do a bowel prep and I had no restrictions on what I ate. Only nothing after midnight.
I don't have an answer about pre op testing until the day of surgery. I had all of my pre op testing and did pre admittance paperwork prior. My doctor told me about and mailed me instructions. Her manager called me with instructions. The hospital called me with the time and also gave me instructions. My surgery was on a Monday and I had a pre op appt with my doctor on the Fri before.
Maybe the reason everything is done on the same day is because of the distance that you have to travel. I think you should question them again until you are comfortable and satisfied with the answers. Ask the hospital in your town is someone can have pre op testing and surgery the same day. I know that it's not the hospital where the surgery will be done, but maybe you can see if it could be the norm in some hospitals. This is major surgery and you need to trust and be comfortable with all those performing it.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
I've asked about the pre-op because since I live in such an isolated state, all the hospitals co op with each other because of the distances. I don't know how fast the lab processes the bloodwork. It's completely possible that they have all the results before surgery and maybe they just want completely current work ups. I just find it weird that it would no be sooner. As for the traveling idea, the convenience of living in a place like this is the dr there will fax the orders to my local hospital for anything they need beforehand. Don't get me wrong, I know they have their own policies but I find it a bit odd. I also think of things like its a good thing I'm seeing a pain dr every month, because if I wasn't I would have no idea I have been having a BP problem. And with the pre-op policy, they wouldn't know until the day of surgery and my understanding is BP issues can be problematic during surgery. I really appreciate all the ideas or thoughts on the matter though.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
That's interesting. I guess I feel, as long as you're getting your questions answered and you receive clear instructions on what to do, that's ok.
I did have a pro-op appt with my dr on Mon and I will do blood work a day or 2 before my surgery, but I don't have to do any sort of bowel prep (yay!) and I don't have any dietary restrictions other than not eating after midnight. Oh, but I was given special wipes to use on my body the night before and morning of surgery. I guess that's something they could mail you, if it's part of your prep.

No pre-op, no bowel prep!
I had a pre-op at both my drs and hospital two different visits but the same day. The hospital stuff all could have been done over the phone. At my doctors he did another exam and listened to my lungs. Didn't get any blood work since I had recently had some done...
I don't have any bowl prep ether. No food or drink after midnight.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
The only thing I am required to do is have the blood tests done a day or two prior to surgery - will get them done on the Friday before the Monday surgery. I don't need to do any bowel prep but I think I'll eat light food the day before. I just have to fast six hours prior to surgery.
I also won't see the surgeon again till the day of the op, but I did have some questions last week which he answered on the phone. We're two hours from the hospital and will drop in the admission forms personally at the end of the month. Although they even said they could be posted in.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
Hi I live is small city with only one hospital and the doc I saw asked me to go to pre op. The lab was done at the hospitsl hree days prior to the surgery. There they also did a heart and lung check. The home prep I had to do was the enema anight before and no eating before midnight so it might depend on each persons proceedure and health history. Mine was a tah and left one ovary a week ago.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
Had a D&C and laparoscopy in December and all labs were done when I went in for the surgeries. It seemed to be their normal way of doing things.

Re: No pre-op, no bowel prep!
I had to have pre-op clearance from my general MD and pre-op hospital visit and labs within a month of my surgery. There was no bowel prep and only diet change was to have a lighter meal the night before OR. I also had to wash the night before with special cleansing clothes and not to use any lotion, deoderant, cosmetics and NPO after MN. The rest of the information I learned was from this website. The important things about what you'll want at home post op I learned from this website.
