2 days post hysterectomy: Stomach incision itching question

I had my surgery on Monday. I just got hit with itching on my stomach incision site. And I mean ITCHING... It's like my body went itch crazy. They are fine. No draining, very well stitched. No inflammation. But heavens they are itching.

Has anyone else had this?

Everything else is working fine. I told the nursing staff when they told me what to expect to stop fussing about the bladder and the bowel movements I would be fine [I was. My Lupus does come in handy. Stress me and I will visit the bathroom repeatedly and I have today as the stress caught up with me.]

The itching isn't related to that. It is related directly to the incision which I am guessing is a good thing since it usually is related to healing. Maybe the Lupus took one look and said, we have to fix this and went into overdrive there.

Re: Itching question

You can use ice packs. It helped me a lot with itching!

Re: Itching question

Hi, the itching could be an allergy to the glue if they used glue at the incision site, or to the stiches. It could also be because of the nerves healing themselves. It could be an allergy to the pain meds you've been on, though since it's so specific to the incision site I doubt that.

If ice does not help, perhaps ask your doc about taking an OTC allergy med like Benadryl? Just a thought. I hope it clears up soon and does not drive you too crazy!

Re: Itching question

I had massive itching too! But not as early as you. Mine didn't kick in until the glue fell of. Around 3-4 weeks. I didn't do anything in particular to ease the itching, I just tried my best to ignore it. But I'm sure there there must be some kind of cream or lotion that will help. But man I know what you are saying. For me it was like mosquito bites, where you can't satisfy the itch - the more you try it just gets worse! I wish you luck with that. As you say, it's probably a good sign, meaning that it is healing!

Re: 2 days post hysterectomy: Stomach incision itching question

Thank you all so much.

The only thing I'm taking is mobic for my arthritis. They finally understood that pain meds and narcs do absolutely nothing for me. A shot of morphine would give me a hours sleep if I was lucky. Once they finally got their act together and listened to me [it took the female residents to listen...sigh], the back pain problem was solved with a NSAID.

I'm having no pain at all from the removal. In fact the soreness has eased up. I think my electric blanket is helping to sooth that. When I feel really sore, I simply crawl in bed and turn on the blanket. When I wake, I'm no longer sore. I tried telling the doctor I am weird and have paradoxical reactions so my body doesn't react the way a normal persons will but I don't think they heard me. At least now they have a record Narcs don't work but NSAIDs work well in case there is a next time.

My best guess for the itching at the moment is my Lupus kicked in and saw the incisions as something that had to be dealt with immediately and it's working overtime on them. It might actually be doing some good for a change since I'm not seeing anything indicating it isn't healing well.

I take Bendryl due to the Lupus. It seems to help with the mixed signals my body gets about Allergies. I took my normal dose last night and it helped. It still itches at times but nothing like it was itching yesterday. They used special coverings for the stitches because the Lupus loves to manifest as contact dermatitis. Something they used to clean the operating table with caused a massive patch on my neck due to contact during the 4 hour surgery. So far the body is handling the bandages and they are starting to peel off.
