Re: Pre-hysterectomy blood level?

I am pre op my hyster is booked for the 17th Dec. My iron level is under 5 and my haemoglobin is 10, I had an iron infusion but haven't had my levels checked yet, my DR and GYN would prefer I have another Iron infusion before the surgery but if I cant they seem to think it will be ok. If needed I will have one in hospital or a blood transfusion. Best of luck to you I am sure once you have the surgery your levels pick up quickly especially if your bleeding heaps, plus the doctors wont put you at risk .. be safe and confident ..

That seems a little unsteady Leslie. I am hoping you can get some answers and also test results before your day. Thinking of you!

I don't if doctors are worried about causing anxiety in patients prior to surgery but a 5 is very low and my doctor said they could not put blood back in quick enough if I bled out. Prayers to you. I too believe the levels pick back up once the surgery is done but it could be several months. It took me 6 months to raise mine back to 11 after my myomectomy. My surgery is the same day as yours so will include you in my thoughts and prayers to be healthy and safe in during the procedure.

Re: Pre-hysterectomy blood level?

Ok hold on to your hats. I was admitted to hospital with blood count of 27 (2.7). Had 6 pint transfusion. Sent home after 3 nights in hospital with count up to 80. 2 weeks later had TAH. I think they wanted to do it before my next period - as you can imagine i was bleeding a lot. I lost virtually no blood during the op i believe. Now nearly 6 weeks after op am recovering well - 6 mile walk today in just over 2 hours with none of the breathlessness and racing heart i had been suffering from for last 15 months! On iron tablets for the foreseeable future but no urgency to do another blood test apparently.

Re: Pre-hysterectomy blood level?

Mine was 8 and I have my surgery scheduled for 1/16/15. I have received 2 Lupron shots so far that were supposed to stop the bleeding but they have not. The flooding, bleeding and clotting have slowed down but are still there. I am quite irritated because I really want this surgery asap and hope my numbers are up. I don't know how they will be even though I am taking iron pils, given that I am still bleeding. Just crossing my fingers!

Ugh! Have not had the shots. Prayers that your levels will increase.
