Re: weight

Hi startrace,

Maybe the following link will help you with navigating the site

HysterSisters Tutorial

We are all unique. Some gain weight and some don't. I lost weight initially, but gained what I lost back plus a few additional lbs. I've had to work hard and watch what I eat, but I have been able to lose what I gained plus a few more.

for your surgery and a quick, uneventful recovery.

Re: weight

I started loosing a couple months before surgery, continued for a few months after, then like grey_wolf I gained it back. I am wondering if I started loosing cause of the cancer but it was nice to loose the 20 pounds without really trying.

I'd like to know about people's experience with this too..what is the cause of the weight gain after a hysterectomy? I've never really understood that..especially if the ovaries are kept..wouldn't weight pretty much stay the same?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 11/13: weight loss or gain after hysterectomy?

I lose weight when I'm stressed, so I lost weight for four months prior to surgery, at first because we were going through tax season plus I was diagnosed with cancer and then because I was getting ready for surgery a month after tax season ended. My appetite was wonky for the first two weeks after surgery - this is normal and common - so I contined to lose weight.

After that I started to slowly gain weight until, of course, the next tax season. During that tax season I was diagnosed with a cancer recurrence. A month after tax season ended I started six weeks of chemo and radiation. The chemo whacked out my tastebuds, so my eating habits became sporadic. Once chemo and radiation were over, I started to gain back the weight I'd lost during tax season, chemo and radiation.

Until, of course, the 2015 tax season, when I lost what I'd gained. However, I didn't have any new cancer diagnoses, so once tax season was over I started gaining weight again. I also lost my job just before tax season ended, so I don't know yet whether I'm working taxes for the 2016 season or not. If not, I may eventually have to do something about weight gain once I get up to a healthier weight - I'm 5'10" and currently weigh 126 lbs.

I should mention that at the time I had surgery, I was already four years past menopause. In my experience, menopause had no effect on my weight. The main determinant of my weight is tax season.

Upcoming hysterectomy 11/13: weight loss or gain after hysterectomy?

Weight gain worries me. I've heard both ways I've heard some gain then again I know 2 who after can't gain weight no matter how hard they try. I'd like to know the reason behind this also.

My question would be, how do women's experiences with weight gain/loss after hysterectomy compare with their experiences *before* hysterectomy? Are there women who experienced issues with weight gain/loss after surgery for whom this was previously not an issue?

For me, this was not the case. Due to a variety of factors - including genetics, which is the kind of thing no one has any control over - I've always been on the skinny side. When stressed, I start dipping into "underweight" territory.

However, I know plenty of other people who gain weight when stressed. I don't think that anyone would deny that having a hysterectomy is stressful!

I've always been a small petite gal and have been able to maintain my weight. I've been wondering too if weight gain will be an issue.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 11/13: weight loss or gain after hysterectomy?

This is a common a misconception about hysterectomy: that it causes weight gain. If you maintain the same eating and exercise habits, your weight should remain stable. I lost weight (15 lbs) immediately post op due to loss of appetite, but that weight came back when I began eating and healing. I am now 4 years post op and I notice absolutely no difference in how easy/difficult it is to gain/lose weight.
