Bruising pain & lumps near IV site

I had my IV on the underside of my forearm. This was a great location (as opposed to on top of my hand) because it gave me full use of my hand. However, I am about 10 days post op and I have 2 small bumps near (but not directly on) the IV site. You can't see them, but I feel these hard lumps when I run my fingers over the area. When I touch them, it feels like a bruise. Has anyone else had this? Should I be concerned about a clot or something? It's my understanding that clots start in the legs. I see my dr. on Friday, so I'm planning to wait till then to ask about this, but thought I would throw it out there. . .

It is normal unforunately. I would get concerned if it had a red streak, other than that they say use warm compresses and take ibuprofen. It can take weeks to heal. If you are still concerned or notice it changing (getting worse) call your doctor. I had it and it took 2 weeks to heal. I then was readmitted to hospitla for post op infection and I have been dealing with superficial phlebitis for 3 weeks now. My doctor looked at it yesterday and said I have scarring in my vein from the phenegran they used and it will take a long time to heal, from 2 months to a year. My vein is hard like a cord for about 1 1/2" long and on a 1/2 inch section it humps up past my skin and is about 1/4" wide...it's pretty disgusting looking.

DVT in the Arm

I would definitely mention this to your doctor. I had my thyroid removed a year ago and developed a bloodclot just past the IV site. My symptoms were pain at the clot site and swelling (looked like I had 1 big bicep!) My clot was 5 inches long!

Blood clots in the arm are rare, but do happen.

I am so glad someone posted this thread. I too have pain and a lump past my IV site, and I had phenergan via IV. I get my staples out tomorrow so I will mention it to my doctor, but I feel better knowing it's probably normal.

I had a 'blown' iv in my hand and have 2 places where is feels like hard spaghetti under the skin. my dr said it is from the iv and may take 6-8 weeks to go away. but certainly check with your dr - your problem may be different than mine.
