4 days post hysterectomy: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

Hi there. I'm on day 4 post op. I'm still in significant pain. Not severe, but definitely not managed with over the counter pain relievers.
I also developed a UTI, started antibiotics yesterday. Not to mention pain from a burn injury in my labia from a resident dr during surgery.
I was prescribed narcotic pain meds post op. I have a very high tolerance (a combo of genetic factors and build up during the pre-diagnosis years) and my doc made sure to give me another Rx to make sure I'm covered, but only for 6 days after surgery. The nurses, another dr, and the discharge papers all said to take my pain meds on schedule, around the clock for the first week or so, to keep on top of the pain. But she only have me enough for 6 days, and that's only if I take the lowest dose needed each time. Which would be great, but, let's face it, sometimes it hurts WAY more all of a sudden.
so surgery was last Tuesday. And as of Monday, I won't have any more pain meds, and it was made clear that after Monday, my pain management needs are no longer considered "post-op".
Now, I understand not taking them around the clock at that point. And of course, taking less and less, as pain diminishes. But going from around the clock pain and pain medications, to abruptly stopping all strong pain killers before it's even been a week. .. does that seem right at all? I'm terrified of how I'm going to feel come next Tuesday.
How long did everyone else need strong pain killers? How long did your pain last?
(For the record, I'm not relying just on the narcotic pain meds. I'm also using tylonol, ibuprofen, heat and ice, etc)

Re: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

I honestly cannot remember how many days I took the narcotic pain meds, but it was less than a week, I believe. I know I was completely off them before 8 days. I have a high tolerance too, but after the first few days, the pain dropped off considerably. Also, remember that your doctor may give you a refill, but only if you need it. No two of us are exactly alike so some never need them, and some need them for 2 or 3 weeks. During the first week, things especially like pain level can change fast. Try not to worry, but if you need them longer, then ask. Also be careful with mixing tylenol with pain meds that also contain tylenol as it can be toxic to the liver.

Re: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

I'm on just plain oxycodone, no Apap, so I'm free to take tylonol on top of it.
I guess I can hope that there's a huge improvement in my pain in the next two days, but I'm so used to thinking ahead, especially since my Dr is really hard to get ahold of and my small town pharmacy closes at 5 each day, not open on Sundays, and takes FOREVER to fill a Rx. Besides, my Dr has already made it clear that she will NOT be giving me a refill. Even tho I took all my meds exactly as directed. I'm so confused.

Re: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

I am a month post op today and I was taking my norco up until a week ago. I had cut myself back to just at bedtime but now I only take ibuprofen for the little aches and pains i still get. I only had intense pain for the first few days and then the only issue I had was rolling over in bed. I had to use my pillow pet pulled up against my belly to make it feel better.

Re: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

I was cutting back already when I developed a nasty UTI that I could definitely feel in my kidneys. I had to take a higher dose a few times until my antibiotics kicked in. Now I'm back to a lower dose, and tomorrow I'm sure even lower. But even with the lowest dose, only taken twice a day, I won't have anything for relief after Monday. I don't think I'll necessarily need narcotic pain meds much after that, but I won't even have anything to take at night if the pain gets bad one day.
Like I said, I am just confused cuz everything I've read (research and anecdotal) days that most women still need pain meds (albeit rarely) up to 2 or 3 weeks post op.
I guess I'll just be crossing my fingers and praying that my pain dissipates very quickly the next couple days! Good thoughts, please, ladies!

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

My doctor says that his patients only need narcotics for the first couple of days. That was not the case for me. I needed them for a good week. Now I only take Motrin and Tylenol during the day, and occasionally use a heating pad. I still take a pain pill at night because if I don't I wake up with pain in my side incisions. My dr only gave me enough for 3 days, and I have had to use my stash from previous surgeries because he refuses to give me a refill. It makes no sense to me, in my experience doctors dispense the stuff like it's candy, but then after major surgery they suddenly get all stingy! I don't get it.

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy: how long did you need pain meds, post op?

I was lucky and never needed any pain meds. I think my dr gave me a script for about a week of Tylenol with codeine, but I didn't need to even get them filled. I do think it's better for recovery to get off them as soon as the pain is tolerable, they have so many side effects. I would see how you feel Mon, and then talk with the dr again if you need more.
