9 days post hysterectomy: bowels, bladder and discharge concerns
Hi sisters I'm now at 9 days post op .... A few questions...
Having problems with my bowels the last two days... Didn't go for 4 days after op, then had awful dia (I do suffer with chronic ibs so dia not unusual) went to drs to get some meds (which I didn't take yet!) on Monday but haven't been since Monday so now feeling blocked up!.... I'm getting a really heavy dragging pain whenever I pee and at the end I'm getting a sharp pain when my bladder is empty and feels like I can feel my bladder at all times....Also (sorry for the list) I'm getting a discharge that is sometimes lightly bloody or with slight yellow tinge to it and it smells strange??? ( sorry for gross-ness!!!) xxxx

Re: Advice please sisters xxx
It's normal to have an odor down below as we heal. I had an odor (nota bad smell but stronger than usual) and yellow/orange discharge and saw my doctor. She did an exam and all was healing fine. A foul or bad odor always warrants a call to the doctor as it could mean infection. Here is an article: Vaginal Odor
Sorry you're having bowel issues. I was so constipated it was awful. Maybe stop the diarrhea meds and see how you feel? You know your system best!

Re: Advice please sisters xxx
I am 6 wks post op now but I definitely suggest drinking plenty of water, coffee can irritate your bladder & bowel so try decaffinated. Metamucil is another source of fibre, but Coloxyl with senna occasionally gets me going again. I have read on another thread celery and carrot juice helped one sister almost within a few hours - I have yet to try this but intend to give it a go! I still have a brownish discharge which is offensive occasionally but have been told that it is normal. Everything is still settling down and every day is different. Good luck!

9 days post hysterectomy: bowels, bladder and discharge concerns
I'm 9 days post op too! I had problem going too but I finally was normal after day 6 post op. As far as your bladder you could have a bladder infection. Bladder infections are common after hysterectomies. In fact, I think I'm getting one. I'm going to go to the doctor today to see. With questionable discharge I would call your doctor. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Re: 9 days post hysterectomy: bowels, bladder and discharge concerns
I am 17 days post op. A stool softener is the key to a normal BM and drinking plenty of fluids. I drink water and grape juice. Also my spotting and odor started just 2 days ago so basically 2 weeks post op.

Re: 9 days post hysterectomy: bowels, bladder and discharge concerns
Lisamountain,
I can't believe the similarities in our experiences! I am 13 days post-op.
I suffer from severe, chronic IBS w/diarrhea, with prescription meds that must be with me at all times.
Didn't "go" until day 4, then the dia, then stuck again, then dia. I stay FAR away from stool softeners and laxatives and they have a very painful and "explosive" affect on me ( TMI, sorry).
I also have the same bladder feeling, that heaviness, pressure, urgency, fullness, then sharp pain. I got a UTI test from the pharmacy, and it was positive one time, negative the next. I have only had a tiny, tiny, amt of yellow tinged discharge, without odor.
I feel like everything down there is still irritated, sluggish, swollen, etc.
Something that has helped my IBS in the past is green smoothies: organic baby spinach, frozen fruits, flax seed, chia seed. I'm going to start back and see if things calm down.
My post op is tomorrow, June 20, and if I can get any answers as to why we are feeling these issues, I'll let you know.

Re: 9 days post hysterectomy: bowels, bladder and discharge concerns
My post op went well, although I'm having a little cramping, probably from the internal exam, even though she was very gentle.
Per my gyn:
The bladder issues have to do with the fact that the bladder has to be "peeled" off of the uterus, so there is a raw area on the bladder. My gyn told me at pre-op that she takes very careful measures to make sure the bladder is not damaged.
So during surgery, the catheter is removed, then an instrument inserted in the bladder and a blue dye, and they check for leaks. Then a camera is inserted in the bladder to check for damage on the inside. Then the catheter is reinserted. THAT'S alot of manipulation to our little bladders! Also explains the blood in my urine. They are doing a urine culture to rule out infection, but there would be fever and severe abdominal pain if there were infection.
She said it will be about 3 months before my bladder feels like "my bladder" again.
As far as bowel issues are concerned, she urged me to try my best not to strain.
How are you feeling, Lisa?

Lisa, I didn't know what SAU was until I looked it up. Surgical Assessment Unit, right? Gosh I hope you don't have to have another surgery! Let us know when you can, about how you are doing.
We're here for you, sister!
