Hi everyone, this is my 1st posting. After having 2 leeps for severe dysplasia, I was sent to see a onco/gyn. Well actually I sent my records to him. He said I needed a hyst. just from looking at my test results. I guess Im just confused, because if dysplasia is not cancer, why do they want to do a hyst? I just feel like they want to take everything out and there has to be some other method. Im really feeling angry and bewildered!

HI mixedup to hystersisters

I don't have any personal experience with dysplasia but wanted to share that I'm so sorry you are going through this.
Have you considered getting another opinion from a different doctor? It may be very helpful to at least help get your questions answered.
Here is a link to our resource section that may have some articles to help answer your questions.

Leep procedure

Hopefully someone that has had more experience with dysplasia will come along to share with you.

This can be a confusing and frustrating situation. Do you have your pathology report? Do you know if you had clear margins or not after this 2nd LEEP? If your results came back without clear margins, that would indicate that not all of the abnormal cells were removed and might explain why a hysterectomy was recommended for you. It's also possible that the LEEP showed extensive scar tissue from the previous LEEP and they felt there weren't enough viable cells to do a quality PAP on you in the future. Sometimes the location of the abnormal cells themselves is reason enough to recommend a hysterectomy--if they extend very far into the cervical canal, it can be difficult to remove all of them.

You might like to ask your gyn/onc if an extensive cone biopsy could possibly be a treatment option for you. They remove a larger sample of cells, which might allow for all of the abnormal cells to be removed, thereby decreasing your risk of any future recurrence. And of course, you can also request a second opinion with a differnet gyn/onc--preferably one associated with a different hospital.

I had my TAH at the age of 37 due to recurrent cervical dysplasia. I was able to keep my healthy ovaries, so I do not require hormone therapy. Other than the fact that I require 1 additonal hour of sleep each night since my TAH, I feel as good as I always did and everything seems to be in working order.

It is a big decision to make. Please feel free to request another opinion. Perhaps another doctor will look at things differently.

If you are concerned about future fertility, there is a procedure called a trachelectomy which removes the cervix, but leaves the uterus behind. The bottom of the uterus is then stitched close leaving a small opening for blood and semen to pass.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do, and let us know if you have any other questions.
