When will taste buds wake up?

17 days post op, and seem to have lost my taste for foods and drinks I always loved. My tongue feels like I burned it. Anyone else go through this?

Re: When will taste buds wake up?

No burning tongue but i did notice a change in my taste. I couldn't stand coffee for a while and craved green vegetables and any healthy. This was weird for me as i have always had a mad sweet tooth and could (and would) eat chocolate cake for breakfast. Everything totally settled back down though after a couple of months.

Re: When will taste buds wake up?

I didn't feel like I burned my tongue, but my taste for foods did change. I could not tolerate ANYTHING sweet. I think the fact that I was healing led my body to compel me to crave something bloody and dead. Protein was my big thing. The only sweet thing I could manage was a cup of warm apple cider a day, which I mixed miralax into.

My taste for sweets returned eventually, but it took a while.

When will taste buds wake up?

Day 12 for me and nothing tastes right! Must be somewhat normal. Good Luck.

Re: When will taste buds wake up?

I went through the same thing. I posted but didn't get very many if any replies. I thought I was the only one out there. I too, 4 days post op, felt like my tongue was burnt and then it swelled up and then got a white coating on it. I thought, ok, if the swelling doesn't go down then I will call. It did go down but the burnt feeling has lasted. The white coating is gone and the tongue only hurts when I eat something spicy. I think it may have been from the tube or anitbiotics. It seems I had like three bags of them through my iv before I left the hospital and I was only there over night. I really didn't do anything for it, just brushed my teeth real good and my tongue if I could stand it. If you find out what it really is post something, I will keep looking for you. Hope it gets better. I am now 10 days post op today.
