anti depressants after surgery

I am 29 and had a full hysterectomy in November where my doctor took my utetus, cetvix, tubes and both ovaries.
I started on hrt right away and rarely experience hot flashes or insomina. I am however having bursts of what i would call meltdowns and also just a general feeling of depression. I have been on anti depressants for several months now and feel like they are only helping to a small degree.
Just feeling frustrated. I have gained about 20lbs since my surgery which put me a little over 200lbs which has really depressed me. I have so little energy, no interest in sex as i did before, etc. I feel so frustrated because my husband doesnt understand and i really have no friends to talk to. I am a stay at home mom and*rarely get the opportunity to meet friends. My mom and i are estranged so i dont have any womanly support in that area.
I am sorry for the negative post but i am just feeling awful today.
Just wondering if anyone is in the same boat or have any suggestions on what might help.

Re: anti depressants after surgery

Sorry you are struggling. A hysterectomy can be devastating to a woman's life and a little outside support would benefit immensely. I would suggest counseling. They are usually very wise and can be very helpful especially when you don't have the support of your Mom. Having an empathetic ear and a strong advocate can change your life for the better. They can and will empower you to make changes that will better your life. Best of luck finding your way.

Re: anti depressants after surgery

I have not had much trouble with depression but the anxiety has been terrible. Im going to my doctor on Thurs and hopefully he will put me something that may help. I had my surgery last June and I have struggled with it since. I too have little sex drive. I am 35 years old and really miss my old self. I do work but have no close friends. No one really that I talk to. I do talk with my mom but she is the type to tell you to suck it up and go on. I have had trouble in my marriage. My lack of sex drive, my constant worrying, and terrible mood swings have put alot of pressure on our relationship.

Re: anti depressants after surgery

I was on Antidepressants prior to surgery. Since my procedure I have noticed that I may not need the meds anymore. But I am not out of the woods yet. Need to ween off with the help of my doc.

Stay strong!

azyria
From my experience, anxiety and depression did not come without the other especially when it is hormonally driven. It can take over your life.
An idea....Talk to your dr and look at Lexapro as an option. It is an antidepressant designed for GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). It helped me during the first few years of my hysterectomy with my horrible anxiety. I also did counseling to recognize and mange my anxiety. Seems I had anxiety before my hyster but it was totally manageable, but after the hyster it became a totally different animal. It helped me reconnect with life.

Hope you find your peace of mind soon.

Re: anti depressants after surgery

Hi, I was put on an antidepressant before surgery and I am going to stay on it for a while. I think it is helping but they have no side effects so why not take them just in case. I am also estraged from my Mom and my Daughter(not my choice) and this surgery has been the hardest thing to go through without their support. My husband and son have been great but not like a woman. Give it time for the pills to take affect and don't give up on them. Like I said they can't hurt anything if they just help a little.
