hole in incision, infection

I had an abdominal hysterectomy June 15, I have a long vertical incision because I had a very lary ovarian cyst that had to be removed, as well as the other ovary which had a cyst.
I have some sort of hole in my incision that has been draining and has to be levaged with hydrogen peroxide twice a day, and lab results showed an infection in this hole, which is getting bigger and bigger. I was afraid I'd pop open all down my incision. I am on antibiotics and the nurse said that when it kicks in, I should be able to heal. This area is very painful, so I am still on pain med. Has anyone else had an experience like this? I feel so discouraged that I just can't heal "normally"

I didn't have an infection, but did have a draining seroma through an opened area of my incision for a few weeks. I, too, grieved the fact that I had to run around with a hole that I could not ignore.

Has your physician taken a swab and gotten a sample of your drainage? This is the only way, by growing cultures of that drainage in the Lab for 3 days, to determine exactly what bug you have in there, indicating specifically which antibiotic will zero in on the culprit. If not, I'd be asking why he/she has you on a broad spectrum antibiotic, instead of one specific to your infection.

I was on antibiotics, lots of broad spectrums, about a year after my surgery. Because they were not specific for my problems, I was taking them for much longer periods of time. As a result, I developed yeast in my bloodstream, because all those antibiotics killed off my normal bacteria, and the yeast went wild. I was very ill for quite some time.

As a result of my experience, I always caution others. And, while on any antibiotics......in order to prevent problems with yeast..........it is wise to start eating yogurt with active probiotic cultures, like Activa. I actually took probiotic acidophyllis, purchased from a pharmacy without prescription........I take 2 capsules at bedtime to keep things in my GI tract, and bloodstream, balanced. It cannot hurt you, because your body will excrete any extra that it does not need.

I hope your unhealed incision shall be but a memory.........soon. Take care, Princess...........s.....Deb

i truly can identify, 3 or 4 days post op. i had an ifection in the incision that drained for 7 weeks max. that was a drag as the incison had to be covered for that period . I was treated with hydro peroxide and later silver nitrate.. Going in the sea also helped.. i was also treated with atibiotics. The incision has finally come together still a little tender to touch, but all in all I think it ok, so hang in there SLOYSTER it will get better afterawhile, believe me i felt miserable

Thankyou for your responses, I do have a seroma, which I couldn't remember as I tend to go into overdrive when confronted with stuff like that, my pain-killer saturated mind shuts down. The doctor did culture it, and I am on an antibiotic specific to the bacteria. Thanks for the advice on the yeast cultures, and it really helps to know that you ladies did get through this "hole" experience.
