Did you get the surgery you expected?

I went in for a Laparoscopic surgery knowing that if things got too complicated I would end up with an abdominal incision. They did and I did...I was wondering how common that is!

Did you end up with the surgery type you expected?

Re: Did you get the surgery you expected?

Yes, I knew mine would be a TAH from the get-go. I had two C-sections and was fine with having an ab incision. There were other reasons, too, but the doctor and I agreed on the TAH beforehand.

I went in for LAVH but knew it could go TAH. I was lucky that even though things were more complex than expected it stayed LAVH.

Re: Did you get the surgery you expected?

I went in for Davinci with a very skilled teaching surgeon and a massive fibroid. When they put the camera in they were astonished at the size. It's true size never showed up on my 5-6 ultrasounds. His assisting surgeon said to him, do you just want to open her up? My surgeon said no, but prepare yourself for a long night. 6 hours later I was in recovery with my Davinci surgery.

Did you get the surgery you expected?

Not at all! I am one of the rare instances of an emergency hysterectomy. I miscarried my 3rd child and went in for a d&c. During the d&c I began to hemorrhage and it wouldn't stop. I lost almost 50% of my blood volume, had 2 transfusions in less than 24 hours and wound up with an emergency TAH. Per my doctor it was the only way to save my life. Otherwise the massive blood loss would have continued and I would have bled to death in the operating room. I am so very thankful for skilled doctors and all that modern medicine has to offer.

Wow voscat it sounds like you had quite an experience. We were expecting I would need an emergency hysterectomy when my son was born but thankfully it never got quite that bad. I was able to wait a couple years and have it be scheduled instead. I hope you find this site as helpful as I have!

Re: Did you get the surgery you expected?

No we planned for a lavh and altho i did get that i ended up with a massive posterior repair for a surprise rectocele my doc wasn't expecting. I guess having two babies over 9 lbs without an episiotomy blew out my fascia between my vagina and my rectum. So i woke up in horrible pain like someone was slicing through my perineum.

Yes, this site has been enormously helpful to me. Since mine was an emergency hyst, I was not prepared at all. I was still mourning the loss of our baby and woke up to find it was all over for good. You just never know what life is going to throw at you...

Re: Did you get the surgery you expected?

Yes, I did- and, happily, it went exactly by the numbers- no big surprises, no complications.
