Importance of second &/or third options
A friend of mine went to a new GYN because she had been spotting for several months. He did an ultrasound, said she had large fibroids, and recommended a hysterectomy. He then proceeded to give her hormone shots (estrogen). When we were talking about it, I recommended she get another opinion for several reasons: 1) I believe you should always have another opinion when surgery is recommended, 2) she has been in menopause for 10 years. I was surprised that fibroids developed all of a sudden, & 3) I thought estrogen "fed" fibroids and made them grow; why would he give her estrogen.
She went to the doctor I recommended for another opinion. He also did an ultrasound. He said she did NOT have fibroids, she had polyps. He recommended a D & C to remove the polyps. He said usually they are benign. If they turned out to be benign, a D&C was all she needed. She had the D & C yesterday (out patient procedure), polyps were confirmed. She won't get the full pathology report until next week, but everything is expected to be normal.
She could have ended up with a potentially life changing surgery. Instead, she had a minor procedure done. She is very happy.
It pays to have several opinions.
