11.7cm Fibroid and looking at treatment options

Hi there,

Have recently found out I have a 11.7cm Fibroid arising from the Fundus (don't know what this actually means) with a uterus the size of 13 x 6.5 x 11.5cm and am due to meet specialist to discuss treatment options in a week

While my period has been a little heavier with small clots there has been nothing of a real concern there.

I am iron deficient and feel tired and find it hard to concentrate most days. Experiencing back, hip and leg pain - dull pain all day which sometimes gets worse, incontinence when I sneeze and a general discomfort in tummy due to bloating and intermittent light pain.

My Symptoms are not significant but are constant - I am only 34 and want to have kids so am concerned around the impact on both leaving it alone or having it removed.... but based on the size Should I not have it removed? These things only grow generally?

Would love to hear stories of others with like experience

Thank you in advance

Re: 11.7cm Fibroid and looking at treatment options

You really have three options if you want to have children in the future. 1) do nothing - some people have trouble getting pregnant with fibroids and fibroids that large can make pregnancy difficult and uncomfortable. 2) Myomectomy - remove the fibroid(s). This does require a significant recovery period because it is major surgery but is considered the gold standard for treatment for women who want to get preganant. This is also what most doctors will recommend. 3)Uterine fibroid embolization - many places you read will tell you this is not an acceptable option for women who want to get pregnant but newer research shows there is no difference between myomectomies and UFEs with preganacies. The big difference is Myomectomy removes the fibroids while UFE just shrinks them but the recovery times and potential complications are also very different.

Look at some of the medical journals and talk to both a GYN and IR to see what all your options are.
