Try to understand that it's for your protection...
If my insurance company had been half as deligent as your company, I would not be suffering as I am. I went to a doctor to have a fibriod tumor removed and emerged from the surgery with no ovaries. (He never discussed removing my ovary with me and he added to the consent form after I signed it!) I had no problem with my ovaries and there is no ovarian cancer in my family. The reason the doctor noted was, The left ovary "looked bad". (The right ovary he claimed did not exist. I have an ultra-sound report that said it did exist.) To date, the insurance company refuses to tell me what the doctor defined as my problem for them to sanction such unnecessary surgery. I only had "recent" corpus luteum and follicular cysts, the largest 2.5 cm. At the time, I was not menopausal.
It may prelong things, but understand, your insurance company is utimately trying to protect you. Take my story as what could happen when the insurance company does not make sure doctors are giving you all options. I had no options. Life without ovaries, for me, is horrible!

And this isn't elective surgery. By the time you decide to have one, normally you really need it.
|
The American Medical Association definition of elective surgery:
"Surgery of a nonemergency nature. Also a term used to describe the degree of urgency and thus the timing of any procedure that a patient may be advised to undergo. When there is no need for urgency, the patient - in consultation with his or her physician - can select the most convenient time."
When would a hyst be considered NOT elective? When cancer is suspected or if there is life threatening bleeding.
Most of the reasons for having a hyst - pain, endo, adeno, fibroids, excessively long periods, even prolapses - are not life threatening, and while the quality of life may not be terrific, we can live with them.

Insurance Turned me down?!?!
If that's the case, it stinks. Would it be like that if men were loosing their bladders, and cramping and bleeding all month? It's just a shame.
