How long before I can play tuba again after hysterectomy?

I play tuba and trombone in several groups, with rehearsals twice weekly. Other than the obvious carrying of the instruments due to their weight, can anyone tell me how long it might be before I can start playing again?

Re: How long before I can play tuba again after hysterectomy?

Tuba Chick-
Yes, the weight will be an issue for possibly up to 6 weeks or longer, depending on when your Dr releases you from lifting restrictions. For me, I wasn't allowed to lift or carry anything heavier than 5 lbs for the full 6weeks, and now at almost 9 weeks, I'm only allowed to lift up to 15lbs until at least 12weeks.

As for playing your instruments, it may be as long as the lifting restrictions because of the stomach muscle strength you need to play. You will only have small "poke hole" incisions, but it takes 6weeks or longer for those muscles to heal internally. The deep breaths and pressure needed to blow through the mouthpieces may have to wait until you regain some strength. I've found that even exerting pressure at this point still causes discomfort internally on the ligaments and muscles in the abdomen and pelvic area.

Please follow your Drs restrictions AND when you are cleared to resume your music, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! If you start having pain, swelly belly, or get just plain exhausted, slow down! You only get one chance to heal right the first time! Best of luck to you. And remember, this is really a short time in the big picture of life. You can make beautiful music again once you are healed. 😇

This is definitely a question you need to ask your doctor. We have had several singers, including opera singers, come through our site. This also takes lots of abdominal muscle support. They were restricted from singing for various time frames to let all heal.

Re: How long before I can play tuba again after hysterectomy?

I can tell you i play flute, and 4 weeks out had a couple issues. The breathing, holding my arms up for extended period of time, and (you will laugh!) I couldnt tap my foot to keep time, it hurt my lower belly/groin!! Take it slow, i had LAVH so only 3 tiny abd incisions, but still a lot of work in the healing department. Good luck!
