5 days post hysterectomy - pain medication and running a temperature

What would be a better pain medicine after hysterectomy to be sent home with. I will explain my reason for asking this after I hear your thoughts. Percocet pill or dilaudid pill? I just need some insight on both of them. Plus, I am running a 101 temp. Is this ok? Thank you.

Re: 2 questions I need help with.

Well let's start with the basics
Percocet is Acetaminophen / Oxycodone and a Narcotic
Dilaudid is Hydromorphone and also Narcotic

I had Diluadid in my IV in the hospital but came home with Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen which is an opioid combine with codeine.

All of them work on moderate to severe pain, all carry the risk of addiction and all have side effects (especially constipation)
I weaned myself off after 5 days at home (3 days in the hospital on the drip/pump) as the side effects were too much for me.I was advised to take Ibuprofen (800 mg) instead.

If the one you have prescribed isn't working then call your doctor or if you have a history of addiction (not saying you do) then talk to them about changing to something else.

Re: 2 questions I need help with.

I had a prescription for Tylenol with codeine, but never need to take any. As another poster suggested, if whatever you are taking isn't working well or is causing side effects, ask your dr if you can try something else. I think you should check in with your dr about the fever.

Re: 2 questions I need help with.

Dilauded made me throw up, violently. Percocet didn't do a whole lot for me. I only took 3 Percocet and decided I was fine, I didn't need anything. I didn't either. Even my ibuprofen the doctor prescribed was only 600mg, not 800. I think I took 5 of those over the last 5 weeks.

Re: 2 questions I need help with.

I took a combination of Percocet and Naproxin. I was later switched to Vicodin. I still had aches and pains - but the pain was bearable. I was more uncomfortable than in really bad pain. I think for me the gas pains were worse than my surgery pains.

Please call the doctor with that temperature just for peace of mind. It is always better to err on the side of caution after surgery. You are much too important to leave your healing to chance - so please call. A temperature can be caused by so many different variables - so let a professional decide what your options are.

In the meantime, drink as much water as you can.

Hugs and feel better.

Re: 2 questions I need help with.

They prescribed me dilaudid for pain. All it does to me is knock me out and sleep but doesn't take care of my pain. I have a few percocets from my exploratory laparoscopy and they help so much. I have about 6 left from that. I take one pill every 4-6hours. I'm still in quite a bit of pain. Maybe I have a low tolerance. He didn't prescribe percocet because I threw up in hospital with them. I honestly think that's only because the nurse was giving me two every 4 hours and it was way to much for me. Plus I took it on empty stomach. I called today to see if I can be prescribed percocet instead of dilaudid. I hate the way it makes me feel and I still hurt. So I will hear back from them tomorrow. It's just been a pain. Literally. My fever is finally down to 99.7. I think it went up because I was hurting so bad. Took pain medicine and it went down. I just want all of this to be over. Thank you ladies for your advice and support.

I'm hoping the doctor honors your request to change Meds. If they say no, give them the details you wrote here about why you need it. Your body needs to concentrate on healing and not fighting pain.

I'm glad your fever went down - that is a big plus. Drink as much water as you can.

Hugs and keep us posted.
