Pre-op Scared!!
I too am alone and I've spent the last few days (surgery is Monday) putting toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap, etc. within easy reach so I don't have to reach way up or bend down. I've also frozen some individual meals and bought a few lean cuisines. I went to the video store and prepaid for some video rentals so I can just call a friend to stop by and pick me one up. I'm just trying to think of things that I'll need and making sure I can get to them easily. Mr. Dr. told me I couldn't lift more than 5 lbs the first 2 weeks. That means you can't lift a gallon of milk so I bought quarts instead. I'd also suggest having stool softeners at home just in case. I bought a stretchy band for around my abdomin so I could place an ice pack there and still move around. I've even been practicing getting in and out of bed using as few stomach muscles as possible. LOL I think if I prepare for the worst, it will be a pleasant surprise when it's not nearly as bad as I thought. Also, I'm making sure I have small bills and some change for the hospital, a few books, and my list of telephone numbers. One thing I'm going to be looking out for is any sign of fever before I'm released. I've had 2 friends who had to go BACK to the hospital and be put in ICU because they had knicked a bowel during surgery and it wasn't discovered until they had an infection. That's why the bowel prep is so very important. My Dr. is being so precise and that and gave me a full page of instructions, times, meds, etc. I had to get out my day planner to schedule in the times of all the antibiotics, enemas, phosphasoda, and my list of clear liquids. If your Dr. doesn't mention doing this, ASK about it!! It's very important. It won't be pleasant but it will be worth it in the long run. Good luck to you and please take care of yourself.
