How long is too long for BM post op?

I didn't go before surgery and I only went a little bit with suppository in the hospital and now I am 8 days post op with no BM and horrible cramps at times. I'm passing gas and taking colace. When should I call in about it?

Re: How long is too long for BM post op?

Not sure how long you should wait but on day 6 I was miserable. I got milk of magnesia. It said to take 2-4 TBS at bedtime. I took 2 because I didn't want to b miserable with cramps. The next morning I finally got relief. I used miralax and it didn't seem to help me.

Re: How long is too long for BM post op?

It took me a week to be able to go. I was taking colace every 12hrs, eating oatmeal and prunes, and drinking tons of water. If it hasnt happened by now for you I would call the dr and see what they suggest you do. Good luck!

Re: How long is too long for BM post op?

I was about a week. Please make sure you're eating enough to push things along, and be sure to eat lots of fiber and drink a ton of water. I'm not sure if you're a coffee drinker, but it works for me every time. Keep taking those stool softeners! I'm happy you're passing gas - that's a great sign!! Oh, I drank prune juice (gross!!) every day for about three weeks. Magic!

Thank you so much. I thought about a laxative but was unsure. I think I will try that over the next couple of days.

If I were you I would call now. You don't want a bowel impaction.

Here's a post-op article on when to call the Dr.
