Upcoming hysterectomy 7/23: Risk of nicked bladder due to adhesions?

Having a LA Total Vaginal Hysterectomy on TH. My doc said my biggest complication risk is having my bladder nicked. Said that there is lots of scar tissue due to my 2 c- sections. Said my bladder and uterus are stuck together and will need to be peeled apart. I'm not sure if she's actually seen these adhesions, maybe through the ultrasound or it's just something that typically happens after c-sections. Is this part of the standard spiel?

Hi WishIknewmore -

I do not know if this is part of the standard warnings with adhesions from a c-section. But it could be something she is seeing on the ultrasound that your bladder and uterus are stuck together.

We do have lots of ladies on this site, so hopefully someone with similar experience will see this post and respond.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 7/23: Risk of nicked bladder due to adhesions?

My uterus and bladder were fused together as was my cervix. My dr spent quite s bit of time getting them apart. He was not able to fully remove my cervix from my bladder. He had to leave part of it. He did so because he was afraid he would nick my bladder.

I did have one section. My dr did mine abdominally. He had lots of room to work. I am no dr. But I would think that if she is that worried about nicking the bladder with the laparoscopic surgery that you might want to ask about an abdominal one. I don't know any of your other medical issues or leave from work situation. I will say I went back to work part time at 4 weeks.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 7/23: Risk of nicked bladder due to adhesions?

I know with the robotic a skilled surgeon can do it but I am not sure with the regular lap assist vaginal. I know you only have a couple days, but personally, I would consult with another doctor to get their opinion unless you have complete confidence in this. I thought ultrasounds did not show adhesions but anything is possible.

May I ask what the reason is for the hysterectomy?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 7/23: Risk of nicked bladder due to adhesions?

Cervical dysplasia. Had the surgery yesterday and all went well. When I first awoke from surgery, my bladder was spazzing really bad and it was so painful. They said it was normal. Doc said the scar tissue had pushed my bladder way up high towards my diaphragm so she cleaned it up best she could and put it back in place. Also she scoped my bladder as soon as they took our the catheter. I've had issues with UTI's and the diagnosis of IC (inter-something, I can't recall, Cystitis ) was thrown around. Said my bladder looked good and hopefully I won't have as many problems with it in this future! thZnks for your hep

IC = Interstitial cystitis.

So glad your surgery went well!

Wishing you all the best in your recovery.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 7/23: Risk of nicked bladder due to adhesions?

I would imagine your saw adhesions on an ultrasound or possibly even during one of your c-sections. I don't have any kids, so I haven't had any c-sections. But my rectum is stuck to my cervix win Endometriosis implants and adhesions. It's crazy what our bodies can do! Right now I'm on Lupron in an attempt to shrink the Endometriosis that is all over my bowel. My said if something wasn't done to try to shrink it, there was a 15-20% chance of nicking my bladder during surgery. Scary stuff!
