In Nov 1995 I started having pains that were excruciating. I would be at work and all of a sudden I would double over in pain. This went on for a few weeks. I went home for Thanksgiving and had a few pains while there. My mom talked to me about how I was feeling and then she called her GYN and told him we were coming immediately, she didn't ask for an appointment, she just took me. It was then that I learned about ovarian cysts. I was put on birth control, I don't even remember what now, and we scheduled my exploratory laparoscopy for the day after Christmas, because I would be home again. I was 20 years old and having surgery, I was so scared. Between my first Dr appt and my surgery I had one cyst that grew from the size of dime to the size of a grapefruit, in 1 month.
We did my pre-op the day before Christmas and my surgery the day after. During my laparoscopy my Dr found endometriosis and fibroids. After my surgery he came and talked to me and told me I had a 15% chance of ever having my own children. It was hard to take. I wans't married or even dating anyone seriously, but news like that makes you pause.
I had pains on and off for years, I just learned to live with the pains and a heating pad. I eventually married and through miracles had 2 girls. I had almost every pregnancy complication out there.
At my 6 week appt, after my 2nd baby, I found out I had precancer cells for cervical cancer and I ended up having cryotherapy. When she was 10 months old I had a cyst burst, I thought I had pains before, this was unbearable. I called my mom and my husband and quickly took a trip to the hospital. My Dr recommended a hyster at that time, but we wanted to try for one more. My ovaries were so covered with cysts he told us it would be almost impossible. We beat the odds and were able to have 1 more, with the help of many meds and my Dr.
Now I have 3 girls and am ready for my hyster. I rejoice in feeling no more pains, no more burst cysts, and no more bad days. I realize that it will take some time to feel better, but I am looking forward to my surgery. I have people all the time that tell me when I have my surgery I won't be a woman anymore, and I tell them to live a day in my shoes and you won't want to be a woman anymore. I think people who don't live with these problems don't understand and are quick to judge.
My husband is not excited about surgery, he is very scared and the guys he works with aren't helping. They tell him all the horror stories of women who have had hysters and how moody they are and how horrible they are to live with. It has taken me a year to talk him into this, and they are undoing all my work. I don't think men will ever understand what we go through because they will never bear children or have periods.
I'm looking forward to my surgery, I know as it gets closer I will get more nervous, but as for now I am excited my husband has agreed and is trying to be more supportive.
