10 days post hysterectomy, doing too much?

Hello,
I had a total abdominal hysterectomy, including ovaries last week. My husband was off for the whole week to help with the kids, etc. and today was his first day back to work. My mom was over all day helping out and she's not as "strict" with me as my husband was (he literally wouldn't let me get up the whole week!). I'm afraid I've done too much and now I'm nervous I'm setting myself back. Mainly just a lot of up and down to get stuff for the kids, no lifting or anything, but just a whole lot of up and down allll day. I'm really committed to doing whatever I can to heal correctly and in disappointed in myself. Do you think what I've described seems like too much for 10 days post op?

If by 'up and down' you mean bending, then it was too much. They told me no bending for like a month.

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy, doing too much?

Sounds like you are doing too much, you really need to rest and impress upon the children how they can help. I did very little for weeks and have healed so well. It is so very hard but you really need to rest completely for the first few weeks. Just a small job each day like cook dinner or fold a load of washing. It really does set you back when you do too much. Good luck it is very tough when your family has to pick up all your jobs and look after themselves. This is your time to heal make sure you take it :-D

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy, doing too much?

Oh, definitely no bending! More like up and down off of my perch on the couch but a lot of it. My children are only 17 months so they don't even understand why I can't lift them, let alone help me out :/ today was the first day I didn't really take many of my pain meds and I'm a bit sore now. Just not sure if that's bc I didn't take the meds or I was doing too much. Thank you so much for your replies

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy, doing too much?

I am about 11 days out and only been taking norco at night (ibuprofen during the day). Yesterday and this morning I did more than I had been and did bend a couple of times. But 98% of the time I have been laying around. Yet I feel I am paying for the movement with more pain. I just want this to be over! Whine!!!!!

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy, doing too much?

Oh gosh! I searched out a site like this seeing as I'm only 32 and had a hysterectomy 3/6/14. Uterus and cervix removed. A week after I came home I took my boys to Target with me. We walked around for 2 hours. I went to the bathroom before we left and was bleeding. I've been bleeding since. Sometimes light spotting, but sometimes a little heavier. I've been bending over to pick up anything and everything for the last 2 weeks. I wasn't given any info regarding bending or stooping. I think I may understand now why the continued pain and bleeding. Thank you sisters!! I think I've overdone myself!!

If you are committed to getting well, stop what your are doing. This is way too early for you to be doing all of that, and you may injure yourself internally and pay in the end.

You have had a major operation and should be following your doctor's orders on your discharge papers.

Otherwise, you will end up in surgery again, needing your husband to take another week off.

Throw out your super woman cape, get on the couch and rest!!!

Re: 10 days post hysterectomy, doing too much?

I can relate somewhat. My surgery was last monday and my husband went back to work today also. I was home alone with my 5 year old and 10 year old. It is so easy to forget how much you are doing when the kids are swarming and no one is there to remind you to take a break! I found myself very sore around 1 oclock and needing a nap after cleaning up after the kids lunch mess and sitting outside watching them ride bikes etc. I have banished myself to the couch for the rest of the evening!
