Spinal Morphine block and pain

Hi all, I am now 5 weeks post op, and getting there, healing well, but still very fatigued..reflecting on my experience, TAH open surgery, boy was it painful!! I was given a morphine block , which in itself wasnt painful, as they had given me something to 'calm' me down, and I was floating by the time I had my spinal injection--then woke up in a daze in Recovery, and all I felt was searing pain, I just remember moaning about the pain, and that I had been given a spinal block which wasnt working!!! I was thrust the PCA pump, and pumped away.. I dont remember being taken to the ward, by the time I came around it was some 3-4hrs post op!! My family were so worried as I was in recovery for about 2.5 hrs, I was still soo, sore on the ward, I had a drink an vomitted, and omg, the pain!! I wasnt comfortable until around 5 hrs post surgery..anyone else had that? I also wept the next day when they sat me up and made me walk, ...I couldnt really get out out of bed until day 3, so much for pain relief!!

Re: Spinal Morphine block and pain

I had similar experience. 1st spinal didn't work at all and actually couldn't move my legs for quite awhile. At the time didn't realize that's why, would of freaked if I'd known. 2nd worked partial but still ended up leaking spinal fluid, got super dizzy and huge headache. They had to do a blood patch, was almost instant relief of headache and dizziness. But really didn't enjoy the 2nd trip down to the surgery room. I was in surgery for about 4 hours and recovery for 3.

We had the same surgery on the same day, TAH. It took me till day 3 to be able to walk. The nurses were horrible on keeping up on getting me pain pills after the drips were removed. I could at least manage the pain on my own once I got home.

I had major pain after waking up and for 1 day more. Finally after being put on orals, it was better.

However, I had the same problem with the nurses keeping up with my pain drugs. They put on my form to give as I required. I said what??? I never asked for that. They went back to 4 hours automatic. It was better when I got home.

Re: Spinal Morphine block and pain

Ya I was very frustrated. One of my meds was suppose to be every four hours but they were only giving me every six. Didn't realize was suppose to be every 4 till I got my prescription filled. They also never told me I could have ibuprofen in between. There was also only 1 RN per shift that could give the meds, one time she was in a meeting and I went 7 hours without any meds. I was in tears with pain by the time she came . She was good after that but boy looking back that was way too long to go.
