TVH keeping ovaries

This is my first time on this site. I wanted to introduce myself. My surgery is scheduled 8/12/09, Wed. morning. I'm a little nervous. I think I have done to much research on the topic. It's kind of made me nervous. I'm having a TVH, keeping my ovaries and a sling being made for my bladder. I'm worried about a few things; getting fat, no more sex drive or not having an orgasim. I'm not a fat woman but I do have problems with my stomach being distended. I swell up alot anyway each month during my period now. I guess I look forward to no more periods, the pain & heaving bleeding each month, not to mention no more pain during intercourse too. What can I expect after this surgery? Pain level, restrictions, etc? I have asked my gyn about keeping my cervic but was told no because he is taking the uterus out the vagina. There is nothing wrong with my cervic. Is this normal?

Re: TVH keeping ovaries

I had a TVH also and kept my ovaries in Aug 2008. Honey I cried like a baby when they took me back, my doctor saw me and came by hugged me and told me he was going to take care of me and he did a few hours later I woke up and was ok. I hate taking pills but you will need them at least the first 3-4 days. Also have someone to help you up until day 2. My daddy took care of me. I was back at work at 4 weeks and pretty much been fine since then. you will do enjoy not having a period. I cant help you with the cervix question sorry they had no choice but to take mine.

Re: TVH keeping ovaries

I've been told I'm having TVH also (I find out more today), but as far as I was told and from things I've read here, if they do the hyster vaginally- the cervix goes too. Must be the way they go in and cut. Is laparoscopy not available in your situation?

Re: TVH keeping ovaries

Welcome to the site!!!!! It's a Godsend!
I'm having a TVH on the 17th, my cervix is going also.
You're keeping your ovaries, so after they "wake up" after surgery (and maybe they'll never stutter!) most everything should be normal for you. Including sex drive, having orgasms, etc.
There *may* be some down time after surgery while you recover...other women's libido's have picked up.
I can't answer about the cervix either as mine is going, and since it's a source of pain for me, I look forward to not having more pain. The cervix is part of the uterus. If you feel strongly about keeping it, do not forget that this is your body and that you call the shots. It might be worth a discussion with your dr to find out all of your options. At least you will have had the discussion, ya know?
And there are tons of Princesses who have gone before us and they are so wonderful to lend encouragement and share their stories to help us through!!!!
I agree that sometimes too much information can backfire and scare us about things. Wed will be here and the anticipation will be over and we'll all be here when you're done!

I gues that the lap procedure is not here because my Dr. said that the cervic must go. Even though I have no problems with it. I hope it's not a source for pleasure. LOL. The way the Dr. is doing my procedure he said it's because of cutting inside the vagina.

Re: TVH keeping ovaries

ps---- have you found info on here about partial hysterectomies? That's what you would be having if he left your cervix, and he'd need to go in abdominally to do it. I'm sure there's lots of info!!! Arm yourself and then you can present what you know to him.

Re: TVH keeping ovaries

007. I had my TVH almost a year ago. (It was an emergency due to massive bleeding -- Coumadin side effect) and I didn't have the time to consider any options. GYN took my uterus and my cervix was taken by default. It has to go in a TVH because of how it is performed.

I had very little pain post op and only took an occasional Tylenol after the med. pump was removed the morning after my surgery. I tired easily, mostly from the severe anemia I had from the bleeding, but by the end of the 2nd week I had resumed most of my normal routine -- just slower. I enjoyed taking it easy for awhile, especially the afternoon nap! I had lifting restrictions for 6 weeks, but I had no limitations on driving or stairs. I went back to work (teacher) 1/2 days at 4 weeks and was full time again by 6 weeks. GYN wanted me out longer than I wanted to be out because of the anemia... If it had been my choice I would have gone back at 3 weeks.

Sex is normal. DH can't even tell, and really, I can't tell much has changed there either. I actually have lost weight -- 62 lbs in all with the help of Weight Watchers -- and the sweating and PMS are gone, too. I am extremely happy I kept my ovaries!

The "normal" recovery for TVH is 4 - 6 weeks, but each person is different. I had days when I would feel great, only to feel exhausted the next. Be prepared to live in the slow lane for a time. Take it easy on yourself and let others take care of you.

And I totally agree with ohtobeahayes -- don't let the stories scare you. Most women come through with little or no complications at all. And life without a period is pretty fine! I just bought my first ever pair of winter white slacks!

Best wishes on your surgery and
