Does Swelly Belly Hurt You?
Hey Ladies. I am just over 3 weeks post op (TAH). This week I have kinda been pushing it - probably overdoing it. Walking quite a bit, cleaning, etc.... I've have just been so frustrated - y'all know how it goes. Anyway - yesterday I was out for most of the day. I had a doctor's appt. My mom drove me and then took me out for lunch and then took me to the grocery store (where she made me ride an electric cart - so i didn't walk the whole thing). Anyway - I can tell today I have major swelly belly - I had sweat pants on and I actually had to take them off for a while. Not to mention I am exhausted!!!
I am wondering from those of you who are suffering from swelly belly as well - does it hurt you? Mine seems to be extending up into my upper abdomen and it just hurts - i can't put it any other way - it hurts. I am reading what I write and thinking "well, duh!" I know - this all hurts after surgery - but I was not expecting the pain to kind of radiate up into my upper abdomen as well. And when I get the swelly belly pretty bad it's like it pulls on everything and I end up having a sore back as well. I'm just wondering for you ladies if swelly belly is an annoyance or if it is painful for you.
I guess I just need to make sure that I'm normal. It's 3 weeks post op and I just feel like I should be feeling a lot better by now. I know - everyone heals at a different rate - yada yada yada.

Does Swelly Belly Hurt You?
I am about a week further along than you. I find that the more I do, the bigger the swelly belly. The bigger the swelly belly, the more I hurt. If I behave, rest, and don't do very much, I hardly hurt at all. If I overdo, my belly screams out -- STOP THAT!! in the form of pain. I don't know how I am going to get through my 12 hour work days.

Sounds normal to me, but remember - you've just had major surgery. Three weeks is nothing, when it comes to healing after a hysterectomy, especially a TAH. I was off for 6 whole weeks.
I know it's hard, but you really do need to slow down and rest more, because like many others have said, you only have one chance to heal properly! Lay down lots, sit with your feet up lots...move slowly, and do a little bit of walking every so often to keep your circulation going.
The swelly belly is still there, although I measure it every day with a measuring tape, and it's only gone down half an inch so far. When I sit too much I also feel discomfort in my lower chest area so I stretch a bit (sit on the couch, lean back and get the arms up) and it feels better.** My lower back still hurts from all the hunching I did during recovery, but once I'm able to I will get to my chiropractor who has magic hands.
**Please note that I did NOT do these stretches at the 3-week point! I only started doing a bit of stretching within the last couple of weeks (week 7/8). Listen to your body (and your doctor) and be careful. Let it heal.

Does Swelly Belly Hurt You?
HI PamelaDV:
I'm about 4 mos. post op and still at times, especially at night after a long day at work, or after exercising a little too much, get a swelly belly and yes, it does hurt, or should I say, "aches". I still can't do any abdominal exercises, and I do still occasionally have to take my 600mg of Ibuprofen and put my feet up for a couple of hours. I'm hoping it will go away soon.
Also, lifting things like grocery bags will also start a swelly-belly episode for me. You'd think by now it would be gone, but from what I've been reading, it can take up to 1 year for our insides to completely heal, so I guess there is a possibility of a swelly-belly attack :-(( I hope this has helped answer some of your questions.

Does Swelly Belly Hurt You?
Thanks ladies - I so appreciate the reassurance.
I am also off for 6 weeks for work. I think I'm starting to get worried that 6 weeks won't be enough! I thought 6 weeks was going to be such a long time, and now I'm half way through it and still feeling like crap - still taking narcotic pain pills at least once a day. I try my hardest not to, but I usually need to by the end of the day. I know it's a totally common complaint - but I just thought I would be feeling so much better by now. Is it possible that I will make a HUGE turnaround in a week or so and all of the sudden be like "Oh yeah! I can go to work now!"???

Ditto exactly!! The problem is that it does not take much to over do it. I am on post op day 23 and all I can do is walk no more than an hour and I get bad SB. : ( I was out running LIGHT errands yesterday for about 3 hours and it sucked the life out of me. Today I painted 2 chairs and was flipping fabric around, did some light work for about 1/2 hour in the kitchen and went to see the tax guy up the street for 15 min. Not all at once. That was it for me. I made myself lay on the sofa before SB got bad. It did not get bad, but the shooting pains although not as intense returned untill I settled down for about an hour. Then I became extremely bummed out. I am surprised this is taking so long to heal, but it appears as this is normal. I am just not used to being this fragile. And for so long. And to think my GYN told me I would be out of work for only 2 weeks. I have been out for 4 weeks and I do not feel comfortable going back next week.
I am finding out that when I am up and about, and feel SB coming on I have about 1/2 hour upright time left. I know upright time will get longer every day. And what I have not forgotten that a bad case of SB feels like it undoes healing.
Bending, twisting and reaching bring SB on faster than just plain old walking. I do not avoid doing it when I am up because I dont want to get stiff from all this. I just know my shelf life is reduced when doing this.

Does Swelly Belly Hurt You?
I am almost 3 weeks post op (TAH) and I also think I have over done it this week and I am in more pain today than I was at 1 week post op. The pain does seem to radiate up to my belly button and it feels like raw nerve endings.....I guess we should listen to our hystersisters and not try to be superwoman.....hope you are feeling better
