Questions about LAVH
Hi, I'm new here, scheduled for a LAVH on June 10. I'm so nervous about this surgery, and was hoping that some of you can tell me what to expect from this particular procedure. They will also be removing my cervix, since I'm having the hyst for endo and we don't want to risk a return visit from my old friend lol! Has anyone had an LAVH with the cervix removed, and if so what can I expect?
TIA!
Jennifer

Questions about LAVH
Hi Jennifer,
Welcome to Hyster Sisters!!
While I'm sorry that you are facing surgery, I am glad that you found us and posted to introduce yourself.
I had a TVH, not an LAVH, but with the exception of the little incisions for the laparoscope, I think they are pretty similar. I had general anesthesia, woke up with a morphine pump, which worked great, and then went home the following day with some prescriptions for pain killers. I was cleared to drive again at two weeks (although I really didn't feel like it yet, because of the repairs that I also had done for my rectocele and cystocele), and I was back at work, full-time, at 5 1/2 weeks post-op, but probably should have started back at 1/2 days at first.
While you're waiting for your castle date to arrive, please read our Pre-op Hints (click here) and the Post-Op Hints (click here). They are full of great advice that will help you to prepare for your surgery and recovery.
Please keep on reading and be sure to post any questions that you may have - we'll do our best to help.

Questions about LAVH
Hi Jennifer--
I had LAVH/BSO (cervix and ovaries removed) almost a year ago.
I remember how nervous and scared I was too. I can tell you that my imagination made things to be out far worse than any of it was.
My LAVH was done under general anesthesia, and there were three thumbnail incisions made---one next to my navel in which they insert the laparoscope for visualization--and two on either side of my pubic hair line, where they insert the surgical instruments. When I woke up in recovery I was not on any pain medication yet (they wanted my BP to come up a litte) however, my pain level was about a 4 (on a scale of 1 - 10)---and was actually no worse than the severe pain I would have with my periods. I was given an injection of morphine and Toradol after about 10 minutes, and my pain level was never above a 3 after that. I was released to go home 27 hours after surgery. I managed very well on Vicodan initially and then switched to Motrin after about 4 days.
My recovery went smoothly and was uneventful, which I attribute to taking it really slow and easy and following the information I learned here. I was released to drive after two weeks---took a full six weeks off from work, and then started back part-time. My biggest complaint was that I tired easily even after several weeks. At one year post-op, I am on Vivelle .05 and doing very well.
I hope some of this helps.
Good luck to you!

Questions about LAVH
Hi Jennifer,
I had an LAVH on 5/16 and I am doing very well. I went in on a Friday morning and came home Sunday morning. I had a general for anesthesia and a Morphine pump and Toradol (an NSAID) every 8 hours for pain control. I never had pain over a 4 on a 1-10 pain scale. I was sore in the hospital but not in much pain at all after the first few hours. I was up walking around Friday night for 2 small trips down the hall and back with a nurse assistant. By Saturday morning I had my cathader and IV out and was taking walks around the floor on my own. I was given solid foods for lunch on Saturday (all liquids before that) and tolerated everything well.
When the IV was out, I was given Percoset and Toradol pills for pain every 8 hours as needed. When I came home I only took the Percoset at night to get a good nights sleep. I feel stronger every day. I still get a little sore after a long day but no pain. I never felt like I needed to stay in bed all day after I got home. I do nap every day and take everything slow, but I feel wonderful.
I have no big incision, just 4 little ones that were covered with steri strips for a few days. I go for my first post-op with my Doc in 2 days and should find out then when I go back to work. The way I feel now, I am going to ask to go back part-time at the 3 week mark, but please know I'm told I'm bouncing back faster then most ladies. Some women with an LAVH stay out for as much as 8 weeks mostly because of fatigue but I think 4-6 weeks is average.
I still have my ovaries, but my cervix and uterus are gone. I hope this helps you some. I am so glad I had this done and I feel wonderful already. Take care and keep reading and posting. This site helped me so much before and after my surgery. I can thank the ladies here enough.

Questions about LAVH
I had a LAVH/BSO on 05/07 and I'm doing great. The way a vagina hyst is done, there is no option to keep the cervix. That was okay in my case since that was the source of one of my problems.
I asked for my DR to take pictures during the procedure and I'm so glad she did. While in there she viewed my appendix and my liver. She could see everything from the diaphragm to the pelvis and it all looked good. It's nice to know I shouldn't be having any problems in those area for a while.
Because my uterus was a little large (over 300 grams, just under a pound), had a 10 inch fibroid and other knobby fibroids it was quite a job getting it out through the vagina. As a result I was a little tender for about a week - a soreness similar to having too much intercourse.
The other aspect most people will tell you about is the gas they use to fill up the abdomenal cavity so they can see things with the scope. I asked my DR about this and she most of the gas comes out when they pull the uterus - sort of like opening a warm bottle of soda. Pop! However, she was also careful to work most of the rest out. Still, there's a little gas pain on top of the usual bowel gas pain. I felt it mostly on my shoulders and neck but it worked it's way out quickly. That's another benefit to walking.
Other than that, life is great. Pain is minimal. I told my DR I'm feeling so well because she took out the bits that hurt.
