Kept Ovaries, why the hot flashes

Hi Everyone:

Hope you can help me alittle here..I had a subtotal hysterectomy last Wednesday.. (kept ovaries and cervix) I started having Hot Flashes Sunday morning..relatively strong..lasting more than a few minutes..

Noticable Sunday Monday and today..last night I was woken up by them, could this be related to the general anesthesia coming out of my system, I haven't had to take the pain med (Dilaudid) since Sunday..could it be the pain med leaving my system?

I see dr this afternoon for check up, I will mention this, but I wanted to see if anyone else had this happen when they kept their ovaries?

My reasons for the hyst were ,excessive bleeding, hormonal imbalance, extreme monthly pain, failed hormonal therapy.

Now I know the hyster won't touch the hormonal imbalance, wondering if I should look into the progesteron creams, as one of the reasons for the hyst was an intolerance to the progesterone therapies that we tried.

Thanks

Anna

Hot Flashes

Hi Anna,

I had the same thing happen to me. I had my left ovary removed but was able to keep my right one. I got hot flashes and night sweats for about 5 or 6 weeks after my surgery. I mentioned it to my doctor and he said my ovary was shocked from the surgery and give it some time to recover. Sure enough it did get better. Hang in there.

Hugs,

Kathy

Kept Ovaries, why the hot flashes

HI Anna,

As Kathy said, sometimes the ovaries take a little vacation immediately following surgery. Generally they start working again within a couple of weeks.

I just wanted to suggest that you take your temperature, or make sure they do at the doctor's office. Some girls have reported that they run a very low grade temp right after surgery and it makes them feel "warm". This might also be conributing to how you are feeling. But, to be on the safe side, make sure you aren't running a fever.

Be sure to mention this to your doctor so he can treat you if need be. Some girls have reported that their doctors have placed them on hormones temporarily until the ovaries begin to funciton again.

Let us know how your doctor visit goes today. Take care, and have a great day!

Hi
Just wanted to let you know I too thought I was having hot flashes....I was a week post and would just break out in a sweat..I I never got warm before..I finally took my temp.and found I was running a low grade fever 100.5 ... the doc put me on antibodys and after about 3 days never had that feeling again..yeah!

Hope all is well.. I also heard your ovaries can go into shock..

Thanks for your input

Yes, I should have mentioned that I have been taking my temp, it's been normal all along..

Today I feel really crappy..I had been feeling very good, with the exception of Monday when I tripped up the stairs, but the pain med and heating pad took care of that, and by Monday night the pain was gone..yesterday I felt really really good, maybe I bent over one too many x's to pick something up.

I will definitely let my dr know, maybe it is just that my ovaries got insulted by the surgery (lol), and they will take a couple weeks to start working properly again.

Thanks for all your input and I will let you know what's up after I see the Dr today.

Hi Anna, I thought I would give you just a little more info. Have you visited the Hormone Jungle Forum yet? Those ladies can tell you all about different hormone treatments that are available. They really are good and know their stuff. Here is an easy link to the Hormone Jungle if you are interested. You might be able to find some info to take with you to the doctor. Take care!

Anna, Anna,

What are we going to do with you? You are a candidate for the pillow to pay a visit!!

You "tripped going up stairs"? You have been "bending over too many x's"? Tsk! Tsk!

Neither of these things are on the "recommended activities list". Remember that list? It allows resting with your feet up, naps, watching TV, playing cards, drinking lots of water, walking a little each day, and eating nutritious food. Yes! That list!

Take care and as we said, let us hear from you after the doctor visit today.

Do spend some time in the Hormone Jungle, as Nancy suggested. They have some very wise ladies over there! And, there are no stairs to get there, and they don't allow bending over either!

Blessings and s

Kept Ovaries, why the hot flashes

I had my hysterectomy and kept my ovaries and I have MAJOR hot flashes. My dr said that i had to take hormone replacement for 3 months after the surgery due to ovaries coming back around after the surgery and start producing.I at times think these hot flashes are going to kill me (hahaha) but they are getting better.Ask for hormone replacement meds until your ovaries kick in. Good Luck

Thanks

Thanks for letting me know that happened to you with keeping your ovaries too..

Seems like this is a normal response..for a little while anyway.

If this continues into next week I will definitely be ringing the dr!!
