Re: Robot taking my uterus

Maryanne, what were the path lab results from the D&C?

I had about five weeks of light but daily bleeding in December and January - almost four years after I'd had my last regular period. I told my GP, who referred me to a gyn, who did a D&C and then called me eight days later to tell me that the path lab had found Grade 2/3 cancer cells. I'm having a TAH the day after your surgery.

The thing is, I haven't had any bleeding at all since January. If I adopted the "let's see if it goes away on its own" attitude, I'd be sitting here right now thinking that everything was okay - and I'd be wrong.

If the path lab found cancer cells or complex hyperplasia with atypia in the material removed during your D&C, then yeah, you definitely want to get this taken of on Tuesday. If it was complex or simple hyperplasia *without* atypia, eh, maybe yes, maybe no.

Other factors to consider would be:
1) Family history of gynecological cancers and/or hyperplasia;
2) Your mother's (and sisters' ?) ages when they went through menopause, as these might give you some idea of when you would naturally go through it.

Re: Robot taking my uterus

Gee, Maryannc...I think I have you beat for the oldest menstrating woman...I was 60 1/2 when I had my LMP. It's no fun, is it!

My situation is a little different. I spotted two small spots 2 years post menopause and was dx'd with endometrial cancer. Everything was removed (DvH/BSO- the 4 hour version) March 20 this year.

Welcome to the club. What's YOUR diagnosis?

Re: Robot taking my uterus

: I guess my question would be, what was the suspected cause of the bleeding? Hormonal, possible cancer, unknown? If cancer is suspected, why wait. If not, how bad was the bleeding-----would it be risky to have it start up again? If you have doubts, you can reschedule. If this is a recurring problem, chances are it would continue to recur. In the end, you can always wait a month or few and decide later, if you aren't comfortable proceeding. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Robot taking my uterus

Thank you ladies for your kind support. My d&c was fine except for a benign polyp. The dr said that since there was no reason for the bleeding that it might be adenymiosis so he suggested the uterine removal. He did say that if the bleeding got heavier it would then be considered an emergency?

Re: Robot taking my uterus

Well, yes. Blood loss is blood loss, whether it's coming out of your uterus or an external wound, so at some point heavy enough bleeding *would* be considered an emergency.

Re: Robot taking my uterus

I am 56 and 12 years menopausal. I am 5 weeks post op. I was on HRT and bled, they did a ca125 test and it was slightly elevated and I had a thick (9mm) uterine lining. I had an ablation and still bled. My doctor said he did not suspect any cancer but the only way to know for sure was to do a hysterectomy. I felt like it was an elective surgery since my dr didn't really suspect cancer...but it was either a hysterectomy or endometrial biopsies and ca125 tests every 6 months. I chose surgery and everything came back benign and now I don't have the fear of painful biopsies and cancer hanging over my head. I am so glad I had the surgery!

Re: Robot taking my uterus

Thank you jlmjez unfortunately I'm peri menopausal but I'm glad you brought up the future difficulties I'd be facing I hadn't thought of that. I've really only been suffering since march so I'm not sure if I should wait a bit longer or go Tuesday

Re: Robot taking my uterus

I guess I would get at least two Doctors opinions and search my options if I were you.
