DvH spoke with hospital billing and question about time off?
I've been reading all the posts about insurance denial, appeals, and how expensive it is. I started freaking out that it would be cancelled (I swear I'm hormonal) so I decided to call our hospital and ask. The lady was very nice and said they never turn anyone away b/c they can't pay. She said even if the insurance denied it- which they will b/c it's <> and from the getgo in black and white it says they do not pay for hysterectomies- that the doctor would write a letter of necessity and if it was still denied they had multiple choices to work with me. From payment plans, to discounts if paid in full within a set amount of time, to financial assistance grants, etc. I said, "So I'm not going to get a call a few days before hand that says not to come in because all the billing isn't sorted out?" she said no, they do that afterwards and would never refuse someone. That put me at ease a little bit. At least, until my mind goes into hyperdrive and I think of something else to worry about.
I've also read about people taking several weeks off even with the DvH. I work at home, and I'm also a full-time student (I went back to finish after my husband left and I was a single mom to my son with autism). Figuring out work isn't that much of a problem, except since I work at home I'm wondering if I'll be able to go back sooner. It's college that I'm wondering about. . . I had planned for a week off, will I need more do you think? Is driving still a no-no even with the DvH?

You may very well need more than 1 week. Yes,driving is a no-no because it is still major surgery and you will be on pain meds for some period of time. You need to be able to twist around to see ovr your shoulder to change landes and also mash on the brake. Those take abdominal muscles.
I was bit foggy for a couple of weeks due to hormones being out of whack so doing things like writing work e-mails and correspondence is not the best thing for the first couple of weeks. Well at least it wasn't for me.
Sitting up in straight chairs can also cause issues because gravity makes you feel it in the vagina and things swell. My personal rcommendation is at least 2 weeks. The more you have done the more time it can take.
I had hoped for 2/4 weeks my surgeon said 6/8. I was exhausted going back to work at 6 weeks. Got the all clear for driving at 2 weeks.

Thanks Tauruslady!
I can understand what you mean by hormonal. I've been hormonal pre-surgery so I have no doubt they'll probably be out of whack post-surgery.
Oh, the sitting up and gravity thing never occurred to me, but I bet you're right and I'll need more than a week. I think I'll go ahead and arrange coverage for another week and then go from there.

It never even occurred to me that the insurance could refuse to pay for my hysterectomy. That seems crazy. Luckily it was approved. It was funny because I got the approval letter AFTER the surgery. So sorry to hear of your troubles with this.

It wouldn't have occurred to me, either, if I hadn't read about it happening so much on this site. When I called the hospital billing office this morning she said not to worry b/c they wouldn't cancel the surgery even if it was denied, that they'd appeal it and after they'd exhausted everything then they'd work with me after the surgery. Every other surgery I've had has been emergency, so the prior approval thing never, ever occurred to me.

If you have a recliner it helps tons. I slept in a recliner for several weeks because getting in and out of bed was to tough for me.
Also driving put a small pillow or towel between you and the seat belt to protect if you have to hit the brakes and the seatbelt jerks. I had a stuffed schnauze that was really floppy that was perfect.

Re: DvH spoke with hospital billing and question about time off?
I learned the recliner trick when I had my gallbladder out about three years ago. I could NOT get comfy in bed and I was miserable. The recliner worked like a dream and I was very comfy- or as comfy as one could be. That is, a very good idea
LOL, I have one of those pillow seatbelt pet things that they advertise on TV. They were cute and I thought my kid might like it- I bet that might help.
