Weight Loss/Bloating

Hi all: you continue to be such a great support as I await my TAH?BSO April 26th. My biggest fear????, that they will not give me enough anesthesia and I will come awake 1/2 way through...... silly eh?

I have had this monster fibroid for over a year and each month feel, alongwith the pain, feel more bloated it seems. I am truly hoping that this will go away and my tummy will be flatter again. It seems so hard right now? Is this common for a fibroid uterus that is "boggy" (What the heck does boggy mean???) How long does it take for the swelling to go down after surgery. I have read 3 months!! I was very dissapointed when I read that.

Do most people loss weight from the surgery/hospital stay in general? Man, one poor girl couldn't eat for 48 hrs afterwards - that would kill me!!!!!!! I am not a diet freak or anything, but work hard to maintain my weight, although it has creaped up ever so slowly the past few years (welcome to the 40's!)

Thanks for you help

Catherine

Weight Loss/Bloating

Hi Catherine!

We all have different fears that hit us very deeply, no matter how silly they might seem. Even though you know rationally that such a thing won't happen, talk to your anesthesiologist about exactly what they do to sedate you. Having the facts may put those fears to rest somewhat. (and don't watch any westerns where they're doing surgery in a covered wagon, either. )

I had my fibroids for many years, and I was so distended that I had to go up two sizes just to get into clothes. My big one went from my pubic bone up under my ribs...and you could feel it very distinctly. Weird, isn't it? Every one is different with the swelling. I have not had any at all, and my tummy is flat for the first time in years and years. (will be 5 weeks tomorrow)

I think most people do lose some weight...especially if you will do a clear liquid/bowel prep regimen. The first few days in the hospital, you don't really think much about food. And the "food" is pretty icky anyhow. Once you get home, you will be able to eat your normal diet again. Don't worry about that too much.

Continue to read and post...we're all here for you!

Weight Loss/Bloating

Catherine,

Hello. Know that your fears are normal. We all have had some fears going into this surgery. Be sure and express your fears of the anethesia to your anestheologist and I am sure that he will put your fears to rest.

I also had fibroids and a boggy uterus. My doctor explained that it was like a sponge, the boggy uterus is a sign of adenomyosis - not saying that you have it but that is one of the definite signs of adeno.

I lost a considerable amount of weight after my surgery, a total of about 28 lbs, and "luckily" I have kept it off. cuz I definitely needed to shed a few pounds.

I want to wish you the very best with your upcoming surgery.

Weight Loss/Bloating

I too lost weight after surgery. I am not big to begin with so the weight loss is pretty noticeable. I lost it because I had no appetite for about 2 weeks after surgery. I would just eat light or a bite here and there. My appetite is returning now but I still am eating lighter than I had been, mostly because I am not near as active as I had been. It's ok though. I wouldn't mind staying at this weight. We'll see!
