Upcoming hysterectomy: Medications and vitamins pre surgery

Hello Everyone! I don't have my preop until the 10th of February, and I'm just curious what types of meds and herbal supplements you were told not to take in the lead up to your surgery. Yes, I know that every patient is different...and every surgeon is different...I am just looking for a general idea of what NOT to grab from my medicine cabinet in the next 2 weeks. I would imagine aspirin and things like that would be a no-no. But what about Vitamin C? Multi-vitamins? Alcohol? Thanks in advance.

Re: Medications and vitamins pre surgery

Everyone's needs are different based on their individual health and circumstances. At my pre-op I was told I could take NSAID's up until 2 days before the surgery, and Tylenol 3 until I start my bowel prep. However, I have chosen to stop all NSAID's, I had my last glass of red wine last night (it was my birthday!! lol) and will only take Tylenol 2's as needed. Best of luck!

Re: Medications and vitamins pre surgery

Hi cStine75,

Yours is an excellent question-but there is no one answer... really only your doctor can determine what is allowed depending upon your surgery.

Some want just Vitamins C and E discontinued two weeks prior to surgery, while others want all vitamins and supplements stopped immediately. Just make certain your doctor is aware of all probiotics, prescriptions and any other natural remedies you use.

While you may be surprised about what you are asked to stop, the reasons could be some vitamins and supplements:
. Interfere with the anesthics used during surgery
. Effect negatively with the clotting of blood
. Interact adversely with your medications used before, during and after your surgery.

Now is a great time to eat well....try a high fiber diet, rich in lean proteins, fresh fruits and veggies. Drink as much water as you can. Walk at a brisk pace if weather permits. Try to get as much sleep as possible and don't overdo activities now trying to rush to,get things done.

Best of luck on your upcoming surgery.

Re: Medications and vitamins pre surgery

I was told to stop glucosamine two weeks prior to surgery (it affects blood sugar) and ibuprofen one week prior to surgery (both aspirin and NSAIDS like ibuprofen have blood-thinning effects).

I was allowed to continue taking the following even on the day of surgery:
citalopram (an SSRI)
Synthroid (levothyroxine)
ferrous sulfate
vitamin D
acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol)
Gravol (Dramamine, dimenhydrinate)

As Marcia Mae pointed out, different doctors have different procedures, so I wouldn't assume that everything my doctor okay'ed would be okay by yours. But I'd definitely suggest staying from from aspirin, NSAIDS and glucosamine.
