Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
Still recovering from surgery, just had LAVH on Wednesday.
I was nervous, but surgery was a breeze! I think it depends where your fibroids are. I knew I for sure had 1 located very low in my uterus and filling it up almost completely. I thought I had others. Sure enough on Wed. my Dr. found two more biggies. Although I am still healing, I feel amazingly good! Way less pain than I expected. Especially having the fibroids removed. They were starting to press on everything! I couldn't sleep very well, I had to pee a lot! I would feel sick when I ate at times, my belly was getting bigger! Depending on how I slept/sat my fingers would start to go numb! It was like I was pregnant again!
Again, I know I am only a few days over surgery but...as nervous as I was for it to happen, I am 10 times more relieved to have it over. I too am looking forward to getting back to my old self by Christmas! It will be so nice to have lots of energy once again. It's amazing how much we women will live with!
Good luck!

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
Hi Bklyn260,
I had a laparoscopic hyst (LSH) for two large fibroids. My hyst is still one of the best things I ever did for my long term health.
I can suggest going to the *Hysterectomy Checkpoints* link at the top of the web site. Click on it and go to the *Pre-op* board. Scroll down on that and it goes over the different types of hysts - including vaginal hysts as you mentioned - and it also has questions to ask the Dr. when thinking about having a hyst.
Just know we Hyster Sisters are here to help if we can. :
Best wishes~
Mary

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
You know now that i think of it i probably had fibroids my whole life and no doctor ever brought that subject up and i was too young for them to do a hysterctomy. my periods were awful i was in so much pain and clots were HUGE and bleeding heavy until i got on BCP and ive been on them for 21 yrs with no side effects and now these fibroids. after doing research about treatments that this website helped alot with i think i would like to try the GnRH hormone to temporarily shrink them then do bioidentical hormones with vitamins to see what happens.

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
Okay, now that I've read all the replies, I am so confused. Actually I am nervous about surgery I really don't want it. I want to be able to shrink the **** things without the operating room. UGH. I've researched, wrote down things, I would love really to get rid of my uterus, keep theovaries and cervix. Everything down there is such a pain in the butt. I've been on Seasonique for three years now and never got a period again WONDERFUL but now i have these " balls " in my uterus. Well i have the whole week to think about it. This site is so helpful.

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
Hi Bklyn 260,
When I found out I had fibroids...I was very scared. I had never had a surgery in my life..and then to be told I had fibroids. Yikes...it was not fun!!
If you are not interested in a hyst right now...as other ladies said...take your time, do your research instead and possibly do a less invasive procedure such as a UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) or lupron shots (GnRH hormone) as you mentioned. I actually did (3) months of lupron shots prior to my hyst to shrink my fibroids enough for my less invasive hyst (LSH). For me, lupron was a success. I did keep my cervix and ovaries with my hyst. I just had my uterus with fibroids removed.
Just ask all your questions....and it is okay to be confused. I think all us Hyster Sisters have been there too...so we totally understand!!! All the information on fibroids and what to do can be overwhelming.
And don't worry...you will make the *right* decision for yourself.
Best wishes again~
Mary

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
Thank you for your reply. Many of you make me feel at ease. I am really not sure what to do if there was a treatment other than hospitalization I would jump at it. Im not really excited about going into the hospital. Also if there was a treatment where I can come home that day I would take that too. LOL Im just talking here, it's been on my mind for days and since this is a holiday weekend I have to call my doctor on Tues. I have no symptoms with these fibroids except my lower belly a bit swollen not much and when I lay on my back I can feel that it is hard there from the fibroids. With the GnRH hormone I read you can lose bone loss Im 46 and in good health but that worries me, I just had a Dex scan for my first bone scan this year and the results were excellent Im not sure if I should be worried about the hormone treatment, if anyone has tried this please advise or talk to me about it. I would be really interested to know other womens experiences also. Thank you all so much for being there.

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
I only had one huge fibroid that was causing my pain and heavy bleeding, I figure I was done having children, why mess with it!! Really, it's more of a pain running to the doctor every few months to try to 'short term fix' the problem.
The worst part of the surgery is before it happens, honestly, I can't even begin to tell you how surprised I was after it was over, it was like I was worried about this???
My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner!!
Good luck.

Re: Facing hysterectomy for fibroids
I also wanted to add that there is a bit of recovery time, but once it's done it's done.
Again, good luck to you.
I had TVH, no repairs.
