Help! Do I really need the hysterectomy surgery??

Love love love this site. Thank you to all who contribute.

I'm a 51 y/o healthy girl - two teenage daughters (oh Lord, that is ALL I can handle at this point) and stopped having a period for about 6 months, and I thought "whooo hooo....it's over"...until a month ago. It same back with a vengeance and I bled super duper heavy for a month! Was crazy. Finally went to Dr., (he said I looked like teenager down there due to the bleeding...his attempt at humor while legs in stirups ). Ultrasound showed MANY fibroids, some large, and many cysts, and a very thick lining. Biopsy came back with Hyperplasia without atypia and menorrhagia. Dr. said a hysterectomy was a path he recommended due to all the factors and age. He is great Doc., specializes in the Davinci, super busy practice, etc. I don't know him THAT well, so am "trusting him" and doing my own research, but so many smart ladies here, I could really use some advice.

Should I just take his 40+ years of experience and advice and run with it (while doing as much research as I possibly can), or what? Surgery is currently scheduled for 2/18.

Any insight would be most appreciated!!!

Re: Help! Do I really need the surgery??

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy for endometrial cancer stage 1a grade 1. It can never hurt to get a second ( and even a third opinion) from another doctor / gynecologist in your area. Sometimes getting a second opinion can help I you make a more informed decision.

Dear lauriefromtx:

Getting a second or third medical opinion is always a good idea before consenting to major surgery regardless of how many years' practice the doctor has, YOU are the one who will ultimately have to live with the results of your treatment (good or bad). Kudos to you for doing the research & asking questions!

I hope you are able to find the right answers soon. I am sending huge cyberhugs

Re: Help! Do I really need the surgery??

Definitely get a 2nd opinion. I really wish I had. I am also 51 and had a hysterectomy because of large fibroid, heavy bleeding and I hadn't started menopause. What a mistake - hysterectomy was fine - but bladder was nicked and now I have a whole host of new issues. Wish I had roughed it out until menopause.

I suggest a second opinion however don't be surprised if you hear the same thing. Sadly most ob and gyn doctors as well as their college of leadership recommend removal of organs when cysts and fibroids are involved especially when we are in our 50's. It is their recommended "standard of care." Personally I could not accept this standard for myself and found an alternative (UFE) treatment. Fibroids are toxic little devils and in my case having them treated resolved many of my other problems. I hate to say it but it can be very hard to get anything but a hysterectomy after 50. Do you really need the surgery? I would say probably not but if you do get it you may wNt to deny the taking of the ovaries to avoid surgical menopause.

Good luck!!

Re: Help! Do I really need the surgery??

Thanks so much everyone. I neglected to mention I am through the hot flashes, crazy mood swings and all that so I don't feel like the surgery would be a total shock to my system. Still a really hard decision.

Really appreciate the words of wisdom. This is all quite overwhelmin.

Re: Help! Do I really need the surgery??

Surgical menopause is a completely different animal than natural menopause which transpires over years. Some do okay but others have serious struggles finding hormonal balance. There are threads on this site about this subject. Elsie has addressed the subject specifically.

Re: Help! Do I really need the hysterectomy surgery??

Update. My CA125 came back at 45. Anybody have any thoughts on that? Is that enough to justify the surgery 100%?

Re: Help! Do I really need the hysterectomy surgery??

Hi Sweetie,
Many non cancerous issues can cause the CA125 to rise including fibroids, excessive bleeding, inflammation, etc. Also pls note that 45 is not very much over the 35 high normal range. Also FYI in general this test apparently is most useful after treatments to monitor if post op treatments for ovarian cancer are working. I do not think this minor increase in the CA125 by itself justifies a hysterectomy. Of course you also will get your doctor's opinion, etc.
I agree wholeheartedly with others that it would be wise to get a second opinion re whether a hysterectomy is necessary now or even the best way to go. You might make a list of the pros and cons and decide yourself. A hysterectomy is major surgery, with a fairly long recuperation, there are pros and cons, etc. You want/need to believe you have all the facts in your case to make the best decision for you..
Pls know you are most welcome to post in our CC forum too re any possible concerns you may have re pre-cancer; etc. but also pls know that hyperplasia without atypia is NOT considered precancer. I also understand that fibroids often may shrink after menopause sets in
Pls keep asking questions and let us know how things are going.
