do fibroids need removed?

I am wondering if I made a mistake? I was suppose to have a hysterectomy done because I had a chocolate cyst and fibroids on my uterus. I was really worried about having a hyster. The doctor told me he would only take the cyst and ovary., I haven't been having problems with the fibroids(6cm and 3cm) I don't know if I made the right decesion. I am scared.

Do fibroids need removed?

Hi Worried Also,

It can be a scary time deciding what to do about fibroids. They are not fun!!! I can understand some of what you are going through.

I had a hyst for two fibroids measuring 10.1 cm total. I did (3) months of lupron shots before my hyst to shrink my fibroids enough for a less invasive hyst (LSH). In my case...my fibroids were causing some health problems. I was having 24/7 pelvic pain, bladder incontinence, no energy and very heavy periods.

Has your Dr. gone over how fast he thinks your fibroids have grown?? And has he given you an idea of how much they may grow..if any..in the future?? If your quality of life is not affected my your fibroids..then a wait-and-see might just be the best thing for now.

In my case...I opted for a hyst when I did because I had a window-of-opportunity for a less invasive hyst. If I had decided to not proceed with my hyst after my lupron shots...my Dr. felt my fibroids would most likely have grown back to their original size or bigger...and I would only have been a candidate for an abdominal hyst.

A hyst for fibroids is generally an elective surgery...so do not be rushed into having one if you do not feel ready. Do all the research you can...and maybe even get a 2nd or a 3rd opinion. I got two opinions myself and it is still one of the best things I ever did.

Do fibroids need removed?

Hi Worried,

I started having severe lower abd. pain mid February. My ultrasound showed a 7 cm degenerating firbroid. By the time i had my surgery 3/13 i was on vicoden 24/7 and totally out of it from dealing with the pain. During my surgery the doctor discovered my fibroid was filled with old brown blood.

just wanted to let you know they can become painful

LSH kept ovaries 3/13/09

Do fibroids need removed?

No, fibroids do not need to be removed if they are not causing symptoms.

However, you are not near menopause and the fibroids are of a size that start causing heavy bleeding and/or other symptoms for you, then waiting too long can limit your options. Fibroids do continue to grow unseen inside you.

Have you asked your gyn about options other than a hysterectomy?
