5 weeks post hysterectomy and possible electrolyte issue

Hi!
I am 5 weeks post op. I have my right ovary and cervix still. On Thursday I started having this thirsty feeling that went away that night. I chalked it up to a strong coffee I had while getting my hair done. However, it returned Friday morning. I started drinking Gatorade, but it's only been a temporary fix. So my anxiety has been haywire researching. I took 600mg of Advil in the morning up until yesterday. I read that Advil can cause dehydration. Has anyone had that? My other theory is an electrolyte imbalance. In having palpitations too. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow. Anybody have this issue?? Thanks!

Re: 5 weeks and possible electrolyte issue

Hi, I would suggest you get an exam w your Dr & just get a complete lab work up to ease your mind & not just guessing, bc youll get yourself more worked up & still not have a definitive answer.

If youre having anxiety, that can be due to reduced hormones, menopause & it can cause some palpitations. Magnesium is good, B vitamins too.

Our bodies dont handle caffeine as well as we age too & that can cause palpitations, nervousness. So watch the caffeine & see. (Green tea also has a lot of caffeine). Thirst can be a symptom of dehydration. Theres other things as well like diabetes. Palpitations can be due to thyroid, hypoglycemic & diabetes among others...Did the Palpitations resolve a while after drinking gatorade? could b due to hypoglycemic or diabetic. Did they start after drinking coffee/caffeine? If so, Id guess youre not handling caffeine or hypoglycemia or diabetic. A glucose tolerance test, A-1C test & a C peptide test to fully determine. Thyroid tests theres 3 tests for T-3 & T4. Theres some relation w thyroid & menopause.

So I would suggest you see your Dr. Feel better!

Re: 5 weeks and possible electrolyte issue

I occasionally have the heart palpitations and learned that it is from low potassium. I would suggest getting blood work and having that checked out. I try to eat a banana every day and am thinking about adding supplements to help with it. I was hospitalized several years ago for it and it isn't something to mess around with. It can litterally make you feel like you are loosing you mind. It's not fun!

Re: 5 weeks post hysterectomy and possible electrolyte issue

Bananas are great source for potassium. People on meds for high blood pressure or on diuretics usally take potassium or told to supplement potassium in the diet. Dates & other foods also sources for potassium..

Its so important to have a balanced diet.. Which its easy to not follow after surgery, bc we tend to eat less, do easy meals bc we don't have the strength to cook.

Feel better!
